Introduction

C heating almost cost me my marriage. Yes, I said almost because I am still married. Thanks to God.

When I first started cheating, it wasn’t on my wife; it was on God, whom I cheated against. I found out we have all cheated, whether we realize it or not. Hold up before you cut me off. You probably haven’t ever cheated on your mate. But guess what—you have cheated on God. Because before you knew you were cheating, you were doing it. See, when you knew you had no connection to God, you felt like you were okay. I mean, before you got saved, you had no relationship bond, no togetherness, no love, nothing. But when you accepted God as your significant other, you realized that you had always cheated, so a sense of guilt kicked in. But for some, nothing kicks in, no remorse, no feelings, nothing. Because I am the person I am—you know, Rev. James, Dr. James, preacher man, righteous one—you may say, I never would have thought you would cheat. But I did.

Why? Because I thought I could. Because I wasn’t really walking in the spirit; when the opportunity for sin presented itself, I indulged in it. I found myself doing something I didn’t really want to do. See, it’s never fun to cheat; it’s just prideful, I mean, you get beside yourself. You begin to get a big head; no one can tell you anything. You feel like you’re in control of every situation. You feel like you’re in charge of everyone and everything, and all you’re doing is being deceitful. You’re covering up for a person who isn’t really you.

The real question is, when does it all stop? When do we realize we’re hurting others and ourselves? Watch this: Some people realize and stop, but they never repent. Some realize, stop, and get counseling. Some do not realize until it is too late, until their mates have left them and moved on. With God, the answer is none of the above, because God will always forgive you and always restore you to your rightful place in him and in your marriage or relationship too. If you learn to walk in him, he will walk with you.

CHAPTER 1

Beware of Your Past

B eware of your past; never let your past haunt you. This is the one thing that can hurt you and keep you from moving on, either in your current relationship or in a new one. See, your past is nothing more than a demonic ghost, trying to haunt you into believing you don’t have a future. You have to learn to cast down your former life and all it illuminates. Because, guess what? You can’t change it anyhow. What’s done is done. Repent, do an about-face, and ask God to remove the past from your thought pattern and lead you in the direction he would have you go.

When you bring up your past, your past becomes a hindrance, which manifests itself as fear (false evidence appearing real) and mentally kills you. You find yourself unhappy, never wanting to smile, barely wanting to eat, and feeling antisocial. All of this brings about stress in your mind and body, eventually causing health problems. So beware of your past; this is what the enemy doesn’t want you to know.

Paul said in Ephesians 4:22–24 to forget those former things. He writes, That ye put off concerning the former conversation the old man, which is corrupt according to the deceitful lust.
