Turning 40 didn’t sting as much as turning 30 except for one thing. I fear I will hit menopause without ever experiencing pregnancy or motherhood. That aside, Wyatt and I have had a comfortable marriage for 20 years now. Both milestones hit this year. He’s 45 and has paved the way for me to enter my fifth decade of life with comfort and ease.

Seventeen years ago we purchased our home brand new. Baker Street Estates had been an idea in French Baker’s mind when he purchased 200 acres surrounding the wooded area above the river. Mountain top views afford us luxury that many don’t have in the heart of the city. Our palatial lot stretches and almost feels like we’re out in the country alone, only our neighbors are just on either side of us. Our four bed home perches in the center of the four acre lot, and Baker Street has exactly 50 such homes on four acre lots. All homes are nice and big, many with horses and barns. We don’t have animals except for Patty, our little Schnauzer.

Wyatt refers to Patty as our daughter, we’re fur parents. When the family comes over during the holidays they bring Patty a gift too. We love entertaining, as we have three guest rooms.

I try my hand at gardening. We’ve resorted to container gardens for the ease of it. I have containers of roses, tulips, and in the summer, vegetables. Wyatt helps with the gardening on the weekends, but we both stay busy during the week.

Jaden comes in once a week for a thorough cleaning of our home. She’s our housecleaner.

You two are the cleanest people I know. I feel guilty taking your money for cleaning an already cleaned home, she says.

Trust me, we need you. You’re the reason it stays clean, I say.

Wyatt is an esteemed civil engineer working for the private sector for over ten years now. He worked hard in college to pass with a 4.0. We married in my junior year of college, ironically, on a pregnancy scare. It turned out to be a false alarm, my cycle was just slow to show. At the time, we figured it was for the best since both of us wanted to finish school and pursue our careers.

At first, Wyatt worked for the city planning commission, overseeing the commerciate properties. The infrastructure of the city’s water and electric system certainly gave him plenty of job security. However, when the opportunity opened to join the private sector with a doubled salary, he jumped at the chance.

I finished school two years after we married because I switched careers half way through my college years. At first, I was a business major. I soon figured out it wasn’t for me and switched to nursing.

My first nursing job was on the general surgery recovery floor at the hospital. I spent two years there and switched to a pediatric office for a couple of years. Then to a family doctor. I now work surgery prep and occasionally in the ICU when there’s a need. For a while, I toyed with the idea of going for a nursing practitioner’s license, but then decided to stick with hospital work. Had I wanted to be a doctor, I would have gone to med school. I had the smarts. Being a nurse is a fulfilling job and I have no regrets for the career I chose.

While Wyatt and I climbed our career ladders, we skipped out on having a family.  Instead, we took elaborate vacations, bought nice cars and built our big home.

Wyatt comes home from a full day of work. It’s my day off. I work three twelve hour shifts and have four days in a row off. Being I have tenure at the hospital, I work Monday through Wednesday and have Thursday through Sunday off.

How’s my beautiful and sexy wife, he says as he lifts me to him and we spin around. Never in our marriage have we had dry times. He’s always attentive and happy to be with me. Occasionally, we’ll be too tired, understandably.
