    Chapter One: A New Adventure

It’s cold, Adrianna complains as she sits down on the sofa with a small blanket. Why couldn’t we have waited until May or June to move, Dean? Her blue eyes look hard at me as she grimaces. Adrianna grew up in the southern part of the country and we lived in Dallas for five years up until three weeks ago. Moving to Missoula, Montana wasn’t what we had planned to do at first, but after selling my sixth internet business, I thought a change in scenery would be good for us. Especially considering that part of the deal included complete ownership of this house.

We are debt free now, I tell her. The house in Dallas was a huge millstone around our necks, and I am glad to be rid of it. We bought well above our finances and should have instead lived in something more modest.

Geez, Dean, it wasn’t a mansion.

No, but it had a house payment that was hard to meet on some months. My wife and I have lived through some good times and through some tough times during our ten years of marriage. This is the first time we have been completely debt free, though, and I am enjoying not having to make a house payment to a bank. This was a good deal.

    You got a house worth, what…maybe a hundred-thousand?

It’s probably worth a little more than that. We also got another hundred-thousand in cash, remember? It’s the most I have ever made from a business that is completely online. I smile as I think about what I have been doing over the last few years. After quitting my job as a financial planner four years ago, I decided to do something different. There has been a half-dozen online businesses that I have purchased at a cut-rate price and then rehabbed to the point of becoming profitable. Then, I sell them at a steep profit for myself to others who want to run a business for themselves. For me, the idea of having to worry day-to-day about something like a website surviving and making money is a chore. Flipping them, however, is a challenge I have grown to accept.

We could have paid the other house off with the money, Dean. I loved Dallas. The night life, the social circles…

The cost of living, I chime in as I shake my head. Don’t you get it, Adrianna? We are free of all that now. We can enjoy the beauty of the mountains and the plains while knowing that we owe nothing to a bank. Isn’t that wonderful? I smile widely as I look around the living room of the small house. This is probably the nicest place I have ever lived.

My wife shakes her head and huffs, This isn’t as nice as what we had in Dallas. I miss my friends.

Well, you should go and make new friends, I reply. Go out and talk to the neighbors and see if they have anything in common with you.

In this cold? Adrianna laughs. There is no way I am stepping out that door until spring, Dean. The chill in the air is just too much for me. I can’t breathe when I go outside.

It’s in the thirties outside, honey. It’s not as if Dallas never got cold.

How often does Dallas drop to the thirties during daylight hours, sweetheart? Maybe two or three times every winter?

I think it’s more common than that, Adrianna.

No, I think it might be even less common, she argues. I hate being cold. You knew that when you agreed to this lousy deal.

Shaking my head, I go and have a seat beside my wife. Look, I told you that this is only temporary, right? We can do this for a year or two, until I sell the next business, and then we will sell the house and move to Florida or somewhere like that.

California, Adrianna says. I want to move to southern California.

Fuck no, I retort. The taxes there would eat up most of the profit from the businesses I sell. We couldn’t begin to afford living there, honey. My wife is what some might call high-maintenance. She dresses in nice clothes and keeps her fingernails well pedicured. Her hair, naturally blonde, still seems to need even blonder highlights, so of course she feels the need to go see her hairstylist once each month. The bill for that has been hefty over the years, and now that she is forced to find another hairstylist in Montana, Adrianna has been less than happy about the move.

    I want to move.

I know. We can’t. End of story. I get up from the sofa and go to look out through our window at the snow on the ground. Another six inches or so since last night.

Great. Another fucking six inches. More snow than dick for you, huh?

I turn around and frown at my wife. Seriously? Now you are going to start taking cheap shots at me? I don’t do that to you.

Adrianna doesn’t look at me but scrolls through the text messages on her phone. Well, we won’t know for a while just how long you really are, will we?

    What does that mean?

She looks at me this time and replies, I’m on strike. No blow jobs, no hand jobs, and no screwing until the temperature outside is above sixty degrees.

What? I look incredulously at her. That’s not fair.

Some things in life just aren’t fair, are they? Adrianna seems pleased with herself and the punishment she has decided to apply to me. Maybe you will get lucky and there will be an early spring thaw come through to warm things up. Otherwise, it could be a long, cold winter for you.

Then, I suppose the same will go for you? No nookie for the wifey either? I go back to the sofa and sit down beside her once again.

I have George, Adrianna tells me. He’s always good for a quickie.

    Your fucking vibrator? Really?
