Introduction
This is how my career went…start medical school, get married, get pregnant, stop for a year. Start again second year, stop because of hyperemesis, miscarry that second trimester baby. Start medical school again, have my second baby over the summer break. Start Ob/Gyn residency, stop to have my third baby, have postpartum depression, take a short leave, start residency again. Finally finish residency and start private practice. Have baby number four and get fired from that first job (it was really a mutual separation); start again with husband as sole partner in a private practice, stop to stay home with all the kids, get divorced, be admitted to a mental hospital for depression, start practice again, start again, and start again. This was not how I dreamed my career and my life would turn out! But it is my life: the path I’ve taken, and I believe, the lessons my soul needed.
As women physicians, we end up crazy busy! This is the reality of so many in the current dysfunctional health care system. Being overly busy comes to be a normal part of being a female physician. We work hard, sacrifice, take care of everyone but ourselves and then wonder what is wrong when we feel depleted. I know I’ve wasted so much time in the pursuit of having the perfect career and life. When it didn’t work, I naturally thought the problem was with me.
I should work harder, be better, happier, stronger. Little did I know that I was not alone, but part of an epidemic of too busy women physicians who struggle under the weight the demands the current healthcare system requires. For me, too busy at work translated to too busy at home and that led to feelings of guilt for not doing either very well. The spiral was definitely downward until I looked up and found my life unmanageable. It was not until I admitted that I could not do it all that I got the help I needed and started to heal. We cannot change the healthcare system before we heal ourselves.
The healing process allowed me to create a life that I love that is joyful, interesting, challenging, meaningful, and filled with adventure, accomplishment, happiness, and much love (including self-love)! I still deal with depression once in a while, and I still lose socks in the laundry even though my kids are grown, but there are so many good days that I appreciate to the fullest. I want this for you, too. This book is composed of wisdoms and my personal thoughts that may get you started on that path. You don’t go through years of therapy and coaching and not come away with some wisdom! I share what wisdom I have with you, my dear reader, freely and with love—love that is the sacred and the ultimate energy of our universe. Together, we are our best resource. Feel free to take what you need and throw out the rest. Take care of yourself. You and your life are the most important.
