I dedicate this book to my parents, Lela and Larry Goodwin, who have always believed in me and have been unabashedly Team Ericka. I also dedicate this book to my dear friend, Dr. Timothy Benson, who is gone too soon. I still remember all of our conversations about how we were going to do big things and finally get around to completing all of the projects that we had thought of, including this book. I did it!

    About the Author

    Introduction

I came up with and outlined the concept of this book years ago, so it has truly been a labor of love. I have been thinking about what has taken me so long to actually write this book, and my conclusion is that I needed to have more life experiences under my belt to have the necessary perspective to do this topic justice. I initially felt inspired by my own frustrations and by observing self-sabotaging actions in others that appeared to be related to these frustrations: not seeing the dream of having a husband and kids come to fruition. I believe part of the reason I had not completed this book was that I needed the time to acquire the self-awareness to realize that I have also made some poor decisions that were fueled by these frustrations. I have to thank all of the people that have continued to encourage me to get it together and write this book.

I grew up surrounded by so much love that I had no choice but to succeed. Graduating from medical school was the culmination of a life-long dream, because I had wanted to be a doctor for as long as I could remember. I was even the first doctor in my family, and my parents grin with pride every time that they get to talk about their doctor daughter. I was checking all of the boxes and making my parents proud, so I had no idea a curve ball was coming.

I, like a lot of women, was taught that if you go to school, get an education, and be a good girl, the husband, kids, and great job will come. Not only did I find myself without even a boyfriend, let alone a husband, and childless, I also ended up in a job in which I was not only overworked, but was also not always getting paid. My morning ritual became curling up
