There are evident external influences on Punjabi cuisine. The food lovers often say that it was Mughals who introduced gravy to Punjabi cuisine.

The staple diet of the Punjabis is wheat and maize. They consume milk and milk products in large quantities.

Punjabis like eating lentils, beans, green vegetables, chicken and meat, with butter milk and curd. Roti, red beans, chicken tandoori, chicken curry, etc. are some of the favourites of the Punjabis. Among milk products, they love eating a lot of butter and cottage cheese, called Paneer all over India. Mutton and fish are also cooked in the traditional Punjabi style with a lot of enthusiasm and form an integral part of any special menu.

Rustic flavor is very noticeable in most of the Punjabi dishes. Traditionally, they cook their food using tandoors and ovens. Punjabi food is wholesome and full of rustic flavor.
