It is for the reader’s kind information that this is not the original text of "Balzac and the Little Chinese Seamstress." It is only a guidebook written to help students of English literature.

If you are interested in reading the original text of the play "Balzac and the Little Chinese Seamstress," then this is not the book for you.

Guide books or book notes are primarily written to make students understand the original text better, especially from all those angles that are often overlooked by a casual reader.

But, in recent years, it has been noticed that a very large majority of the students, without reading the original texts, rely on the guidebooks or notes prepared by their teachers or others. This is definitely not a healthy habit because students do pass their exams with the help of such notes; they miss so many things that haunt them in their later lives.

After reading this short treatise, I would strongly advise all students to read the original text once again, even if they have already read it. You will see that the same story, after reading this treatise, will begin to take on many new meanings.

All the best.

    Chapter 1

    Introduction

Balzac and the Little Chinese Seamstress, by Chinese author Dai Sijie, proved to be a sensation when it was first published in French. It was an instant success, and thousands of its copies were sold in only a few days.

In this book, the author has very emphatically, sincerely, and masterfully fictionalized the lives of two youths living in the city.

Those two urban youths were dispatched to the Chinese countryside for their reeducation while the Chinese Revolution was going on between the 1960s and 1970s.

Having reached the countryside, these two young protagonists start doing the work assigned to them by the local authorities. Besides doing their work, which is meant to be a kind of order to reeducate them, they fall in love with a local young woman.

At the same time, the author describes their love for a hidden cache of Western literary classics—against the backdrop of political and social upheaval.
