Chapter 2
Introduction
The Shining
by Stephen King was first published in 1977. It was the author’s third published book. The book proved to be highly successful, and the popularity and success of the novel established Stephen King as an eminent writer of the horror genre.
According to the author, the setting and the characters have been inspired by the author’s own experiences in life. In the year 1974, Stephen King had visited The Sunday Hotel.
During that period, he was recovering from alcoholism. The following novel, a sequel titled Doctor Sleep,
was published in 2013.
Jack Torrance is the central character; he happens to be an aspiring writer who is recovering from alcoholism. During the period of his recovery, he works as the off-season caretaker of the Overlook Hotel in the Colorado Rockies. His family is also with him.
Danny Torrance, Jack’s young son, has the psychic abilities called the shining.
Through his psychic abilities, Danny is able to see the horrific past of that hotel.
After a few days, they are confined to the premises because of a huge snowstorm. Jack’s sanity is influenced by the supernatural powers that inhabit the hotel. His son and his wife are now in great danger.
The novel was made into a movie of the same name in 1980. It was also adapted into a television miniseries. The movie was highly successful, and the critics and reviewers assessed it as one of the greatest horror movies ever produced.
King has a very interesting story to tell about the background of the present novel.
According to King, having written his other novels, Carrie
and Salem’s Lot,
he decided that he needed a change of pace for writing his next book. He says that he decided to spend one year away from Maine, King’s native place. He decided that his next novel would have a different kind of background.
According to Stephen King, one day he opened an atlas of the United States on his kitchen table. He randomly pointed to one location. The place was Boulder, Colorado.
Stephen King says that he and his wife checked into the Stanley Hotel on October 30th, 1974. The hotel is near Estes Park in Colorado. He says that his wife and he were the only guests in that hotel that night. He says that
