    Chapter 1

    Introduction

Arundhati Roy is one of the most prominent Indian English writers, known for her great contribution to English literature. Her first novel, The God of Small Things, was published in 1997.

Most of the incidents in the story are inspired by real-life happenings that were probably witnessed by the author herself. The story is based on the childhood experiences of fraternal twins.

During their childhood, the twins were guided by the love laws that were laid down. It was told to them who they should love, how, and how much they should love.

It is the little things in life that create a great influence, affecting people’s behavior and their lives. It is the only book that follows the very unconventional themes of fiction writing. The book was widely praised, and Arundhati Roy was awarded the Booker Prize in 1977.

Although Arundhati Roy had been writing articles, stories, and reviews in the early years of her writing career, as of 2010, The God of Small Things was her only published novel, which brought her instant name recognition and fame. This first novel of hers established her in literary circles all over the world.

During an interview, Arundhati Roy informed people that it took her four years to write The God of Small Things.

When Mr. Pankaj Mishra, an editor with Harper Collins, read the story, he was very impressed, and he sent the manuscript to three British publishers.
