    Introduction

Banaras is one of the four holy places that a Hindu must visit in his lifetime. It is said that if one breathes one’s last in Banaras, he goes to heaven. Varanasi is commonly known as Benares, or Banaras and Kashi, and is situated on the banks of the River Ganges in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, 320 kilometers (199 mi) southeast of the state capital Lucknow.

Both Buddhists and Jains regard it as a holy city too. In Hinduism, Banaras is declared to be the holiest place on earth, and it is assumed to be the centre of our earth, according to Hindu Cosmology.

Banaras is said to be the oldest city in India. Humans have inhabited this city since time immemorial.

The King of Kashi, Kashi Naresh, happens to be the chief cultural patron of Varanasi. The king is involved in all religious celebrations.

Since the city is situated along the banks of the river Ganges, the culture of Varanasi is closely associated with this river and its religious importance. The city has been a cultural and religious centre in North India for several thousand years. The Benares Gharana form of Indian classical music developed in Varanasi, and many prominent Indian philosophers, poets, writers, and musicians resided or resided in Varanasi, including Kabir, Ravidas, their Guru Swami Ramanand, Trailanga Swami, Munshi Premchand, Jaishankar Prasad, Acharya Shukla, Ravi Shankar, Girija Devi, Hariprasad Chaurasia, and Bismillah Khan. Tulsidas wrote Ramacharitamanas here, and Gautama Buddha gave his first sermon at Sarnath, located near Varanasi (Kashi).

There are four famous universities in Benaras: Banaras Hindu University, Mahatma Gandhi Kashi Vidyapeeth, the Central Institute of Higher Tibetan Studies, and Sampurnanand Sanskrit University.

The dwellers of this holy city mainly speak Hindi and Kashika Bhojpuri, which is closely related to the Hindi language. People often refer to Varanasi as the city of temples, the holy city of India, the religious capital of India, "the city
