About this ebook

We have summarized here the essential of this book by the author.

THE TRANSACTIONAL SELF

TRANSACTIONS: deals that are based on a set of common assumptions and beliefs about the world, the workings of the mind, the things we are capable of, and the way we communicate.
We realize how easy it is to access, however vaguely, the other's mind and how easy it is for others to access our mind. But it is difficult to account for this access by means of concepts.
Contemporary theory of mind deals with this problem by experimenting with this ability to know others: how it develops in its various facets, or how it does not develop, in autistic and schizophrenic children.

The author did the following experiment: he convened groups of people who knew each other very well, and each member was asked the following QUESTIONS:

With which person in the group would you prefer to spend more time?

Which person in the group do you think would prefer to spend more time with you?

The answers to the second question were more correct (according to the data constituted by the answers to the first question) than the answers obtained by a random mechanism (a roulette wheel was used).

Another experiment was carried out with the same groups: they were summoned to a discussion group that met five times and the questions were asked again. After a time, the configuration of the groups changed and the following pairs or dyads disappeared: the pairs that had chosen each other but without feeling reciprocity and those in which both had felt chosen by the other but did not. they chose in turn.

IN GAMES WITH YOUNG CHILDREN YOU SEE THAT THE CHILDREN HAVE AN IDEA ABOUT WHAT IS GOING ON IN OTHER CHILDREN'S MINDS BECAUSE THEY HAVE AN IDEA OF THE RECIPROCITY OF ACTIONS

IF CHILDREN WERE AS self-centered as is often believed, they would have problems using deictics (words like I, you, here, there, etc. whose meaning varies according to the context of enunciation) but without However, young children have no problem using these words.

If the child recognizes that her interlocutor refers to himself with the word I it is because he has managed to adopt the PERSPECTIVE of the other.

Current theories of child development seem to assume the following:

    1) SELF-CENTRIC PERSPECTIVE: Young children are supposed to be unable to take the perspective of others and have no idea about what goes on in other's
