THE FIRST ANTHROPOLOGICAL PARADIGM: EVOLUTIONISM
The scientific paradigm of the nineteenth century
Anthropology arises in a CONTEXT characterized by great historical events: the FRENCH REVOLUTION first and the INDUSTRIAL REVOLUTION later. These revolutions marked a profound change in economic, social and political relations in Europe and later in the rest of the world.
THE FEUDAL REGIME AND ITS REPRESENTATIVES (THE CLERGY, THE NOBILITY) WERE LOSING THEIR POWER AND A NEW CLASS, THE BOURGEOISIE, WHICH HAD ASSUMED ECONOMIC CONTROL IN THE NEW REGIME, WAS ESTABLISHED POLITICALLY
THESE CHANGES WERE resisted and fought by those sectors that saw their privileges in danger.
THE OLD LEADER CLASSES WILL TRY TO GO BACK TO THE PAST THROUGH THE REVALUATION OF POPULAR TRADITIONS AND NATIONAL VALUES
THIS MOVEMENT, IN THE INTELLECTUAL AND ARTISTIC FIELD, is known as ROMANTICISM. In ANTHROPOLOGY, this recovery of traditional values will lead to FOLKLORE.
BUT THIS RESISTANCE WILL BE SWEEPED AWAY BY THE NEW SOCIAL ACTORS: THE BOURGEOIS CLASS ON THE ONE SIDE, SUPPORTED BY THE IDEOLOGICAL SUPPORT OF LIBERALISM; AND THE WORKING CLASS ON THE OTHER, WHICH MANIFESTS ITS CLASS CONSCIOUSNESS
THE CAPITALIST EXPANSION of the West over other peoples of the world reinforced the need to scientifically know those other men who resisted colonial oppression and exploitation. In this context, ANTHROPOLOGY arises, which is constituted as a scientific field at the end of the 19th century, the first current of thought being EVOLUTIONISM. This current will recognize these OTHER men not for what they have or are, but for what they lack or are not: the NON-WESTERN OR UN-CIVILIZED.
JUST LIKE THE NATURAL SCIENCES WITH THE PHENOMENA OF NATURE AND FOLLOWING ITS EXAMPLE, ANTHROPOLOGY WAS INTENDED TO DISCOVER CONSTANT RELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN SOCIO-CULTURAL PHENOMENA
THE PUBLICATION OF Darwin's work, The Origin of Species (1859) produced a revolution in the field of natural sciences. This theory about the evolution of living beings introduced consequences in other scientific fields.
Anthropology and evolutionism
THE IDEA OF EVOLUTION WAS ASSIMILATED TO MAN AND SOCIETIES, UNDERSTOOD AS DIFFERENT STAGES OF HUMANITY. MAN, UNLIKE OTHER SPECIES, WAS A DUAL BEING: AS A BODY, HE BELONGED TO THE WORLD OF NATURE; AS A SPIRIT, HE BELONGED TO THE WORLD OF CULTURE. THIS IS THE FIRST APPROACH TO THE NOTION OF CULTURE, WHICH IS
