Summary Of "Malinovski's Theory Of Needs" By Ralph Piddington: UNIVERSITY SUMMARIES

About this ebook
We have summarized here the essential of this book by the author.
Malinowski's theory of needs
It is often assumed that Malinowski's level of fieldwork was due to some mystical form of apperception that he would impose on his disciples. In reality, what constitutes a revolution in fieldwork is his theoretical system for the study of culture, and the knowledge he transmitted of that framework to his students.
(Another essay here deals with Malinowski's interpretation of culture in general.)
We are going to deal with perhaps the most neglected and most important aspect of such an interpretation: the theory of needs.

Malinowski's own definition is appropriate for the essential features of this theory: "By necessity I understand, therefore, the system of conditions that in the human organism, in the cultural framework and in relation to both with the natural environment are necessary and sufficient for the survival of the group and the organism. A necessity, then, is a limiting set of facts. Habits and their motivations, learned responses, and organizational foundations must be adapted in such a way as to allow basic needs to be met.
Man is a primate of a very particular kind, and the characteristic species which he has acquired in the course of evolution make possible the development of a specifically human form of biological adjustment which we call culture.
But the evolution of man has given it distinctive characteristics, among which the ability to articulate language stands out.
The anatomical and physiological developments of man not only make culture possible, but also make it necessary.
Culture thus has a value for biological survival. Its adaptability is due in part to the fact that although the basic needs that man shares with other animals provide the primary determinism, the conditions of man as a social animal impose a secondary determinism.
Malinowski defines it in terms of derived needs
or imperatives
that are related to the requirements of the maintenance of the cultural apparatus, the regulation of human behavior, socialization, and the exercise of authority.
The answers to these derived needs or imperatives are given in the economy, social control, education and political organization.
To the sphere of integrative imperatives belong then phenomena such as tradition (including the culturally recognized and transmitted social structure), normative guidelines or values, religion, art and ceremony, language and other forms of symbolism.
The specific contribution of the theory of needs is to be seen at all relevant levels of the
