hen Karl Maria Kertbeny coined the category of ‘the homosexual’ in 1869, medical experts sought to homogenise same-sex attraction as means to address and ‘cure’ the supposed gendered inverts (i.e., men displaying feminine characteristics, among others) through medical intervention. 100 years later, lesbian and gay activists sought to reclaim the derogatory label at the Stonewall Inn in New York – resulting in the advent of liberationist and homophile movements. Since then, diverse yet interconnected theoretical approaches and models emerged to explain, critique and/or advocate for homogeneity, heterogeneity or even the abandonment of the LGBTIQ+ identification all-together.
