About this ebook

Tanner Hughes had a boring life until he woke up in a dark cell with a cute brunette named Lily.

Tanner needs to escape from the island prison called Kontrain. Along the way, he assembles a harem of beautiful women to help him fight the evil warden.

PREVIEW:

I could feel the darkness before I even opened my eyes.
I felt so light. I moved my hands around, I was cold and I wanted to pull the covers up, but there were none.
I opened my eyes and tried to lift my head. I couldn’t lift my head. I was stuck, totally still, like dozens of invisible straps held me.
My heart started racing.
I couldn’t see a thing. I couldn’t tell a difference between having my eyes closed and open. The darkness was overwhelming, inky blackness.
I tried to speak but I couldn’t do that either, one of those pesky straps that I couldn’t even feel must’ve been over my mouth as well. Something was holding me down, but I had no idea what.
Alright, Tanner, calm yourself down, maybe it’s just a bad dream.
Yeah, right. When have you ever had this kind of control of yourself during a dream? This is real and totally weird.
I was taking deep breaths now, and whatever was holding me down did allow me to breathe freely. I kept my eyes open, hoping they would soon adjust to the darkness, but I couldn’t make out anything, just blackness. I couldn’t even tell if I was on something or just suspended in the air. It felt like I was in the air.
I finally got my heart to stop pounding after a few minutes of slow, steady breathing and I really started to think.
Okay, this is not a good spot. But I’ve got to be able to get out of this somehow. I could wiggle my toes, but not much else. Even my fingers were trapped, pressed tight against my body at my sides. I noticed I was naked now, even though I’m sure I’d gone to sleep in a pair of boxer shorts.
Can’t get up. Can’t talk. Can’t reach for anything. What do you hear?
I listened. I couldn’t hear a damn thing, this might’ve been the quietest place I had ever been, it was like being out in the country, except there were zero animal noises, no distant sounds whatsoever. That meant no clues as to where I was. My heart started pumping again as the claws of panic tried to grab me.
Easy Tanner. Calm yourself. It’s not over yet. I took big deep breaths through my nose. I couldn’t breathe through my mouth. I couldn’t smell anything either. It’s not like I was in a really clean room where the cleaning supplies overpower every other smell. It wasn’t like being in a brand new room either, where the new smell of all the building supplies still exists. This room was absolutely nothing.
I swallowed hard. Was I...dead?
“No,” a voice said.
Was that in my head?
“No,” it repeated.
It was a man’s voice, calm, clear, no real accent.
Where am I? I thought.
“It doesn’t matter where you are now, Tanner Hughes.”
How do you know my name, I thought. It was nice to talk to someone, it was calming, so I kept the questions flowing.
“I know all about you. I know you’re mired in a life right now that won’t let you up for air. I know you wish to be elsewhere. I know you wish to do good.”
That was all true, but it was very strange to hear it out loud like that. Those were all things I never really talked about.
“This, Tanner, is your chance.”
I had a million more questions, but the voice went away. I don’t know how I knew, but I knew it was gone. Tiny pinpricks of light showed up all around me, it was hard to tell how far away they were, they were so small, but they came up all around the room, then they started to stretch upward in the weirdest way, and before I knew it, my stomach got that floaty feeling.
I was falling.

    I was falling.

    Cellmate

Iwouldn’t say I landed. Landing would involve smacking against something. I just woke up again.

Those pinpricks of light, the sensation of falling, it made me close my eyes, but I don’t remember anything after that. Maybe I passed out, or maybe the man that spoke to me put me to sleep. That was so weird, he spoke to me answering questions that were simply thought.

I tried it again. Where am I?

I waited, and I got no answer.

My shoulder was really itching, so I reached up and scratched it. I could move again!

I quickly sat up. Whoa. That was way too fast. My head started spinning. But in the darkness I started to make out shapes. I saw a big lump to my right, I saw black grout lines in the floor and walls. I reached out to my right and felt cold iron bars, rough bars going up and down and side to side.

    Am I in jail?

A single tiny window was letting in a tiny amount of moonlight. I grabbed a bar and pulled myself up, a little slower this time so I didn’t get lightheaded. I couldn’t help it though, I hurried to the window, stepping on that big lump in the floor. It felt like a very rough, scratchy blanket.

What the fuck! the blanket said.

I jumped back, nearly coming out of my skin.

Who are you? I said, walking backward and holding onto the iron bars.

The lump sat up and threw the covers off, raising a cloud of dust. I stepped back once more. I was shocked when my eyes finally adjusted and I saw a girl.

She had a tangled mass of brown hair, slim shoulders, and long arms toned with muscle. I couldn’t get a good look at her face, it remained shadowed in our dark cell.

Sorry, I said. I didn’t mean to step on you.

You woke me up, she said. I was having the most pleasant dream.

I didn’t know you were there, I said.

I guess you wouldn’t, you’ve been dreaming since they put you in here, tossing and turning and mumbling.

    About what? I asked.

I dunno, it was mostly incoherent. I thought you were some kind of raving lunatic.

    I’m Tanner, I said.

    Lily, she said.

I sat back down on the hard stone ground. Our cell was humid and warm, the stones all seemed to be sweating as much as I was. I looked down and realized I was no longer naked. I wore a brown shirt made of a stiff, rough fabric, and a brown pair of pants made of the same stuff. It was uncomfortable, and stuck to me the more I sweated. I was barefoot.

Lily, where are we? I asked.

She let out a single, surprised laugh. Tanner, is that what you said your name was?

    Yes, I said.
