I was home for the summer after my first year away at college. I was getting into my car to grab a bite to eat when I heard a familiar voice.
“Pete! Pete! Wait up?”
I knew that high-pitched, scratchy voice. It could only be Margaret Garrison. I looked over my shoulder, and sure enough, here came Margaret stumbling down the sidewalk, orange hair stuck out in every direction, carrying a huge backpack stuffed full over her shoulder, and wearing a black leotard and tights. Despite Margaret’s wacky appearance she looked pretty toned in her dance outfit.
“Pete! You’re a lifesaver,” Margaret walked up and gave me a big, sweaty hug.
“What’s up, Margaret?”
“Pete, I desperately need a ride,” Margaret pleaded. “Please, please, please, you gotta help me.”
“Where to?”
“Dance class, it’s just out on the highway, like four miles from here.”
“Four miles, you could handle that at a brisk pace, couldn’t you,” I teased.
“Pete Neesmith!” Margaret slung her big backpack into my shoulder.
It was a lot bigger and heavier than I expected.
“Just kidding Margaret, hop in.”
“Thank you, thank you, thank you.”
Margaret stumbled around the front of my car, leaning forward because of that heavy backpack. She opened the passenger door and slung it down, then hopped in.
I got in, started the car, and headed out to the highway.
“So,” Margaret said. “You home all summer?”
“Yep.”
“Good, good, good. Gonna come over a lot and see Benny?”
“Sure, we have some catching up to do.” Benny was Margaret’s older brother, he was nineteen just like me. I’d known him since the third grade when he barfed all over the teacher after running a mile in the Alabama heat in P.E. It was hilarious. I instantly befriended him. I’d known Margaret just as long. She was that annoying little sister that always bothered us, then as she got older she became that annoying girl that had a crush on me.
I had no interest in dating Margaret, and I made that very clear, but just because I didn’t want to date her, didn’t mean I couldn’t be nice to her, and give her a ride to dance class. I’d known her so long she kinda felt like my little sister too.
“Take a left up here,” Margaret pointed. “So how’s college?”
“It’s cool,” I said.
“I can’t wait,” Margaret replied.
She’d be starting in the fall.
“You’ll love it,” I said. “Lots of parties, the freedom of living on your own, scrounging for cash just so you can eat and put gas in your car.”
“Stop it,” Margaret slapped my arm.
“I’m just kidding, kind of. You’ll have fun.”
“Right up here,” Margaret pointed to a shopping center.
I saw a small, white sign with cursive letters that said, Elite Dance.
I pulled up to the door.
Margaret got out and pulled on her backpack. It got hung in the seat and didn’t budge. Margaret lost her grip, stumbled backward, tripped on the curb and landed hard on her butt right in front of the glass front door.
“Oww,” Margaret moaned.
Two blondes in leotards walked around Margaret and into the door, “watch it carrot top,” one of them said. The other snorted and laughed.
I threw my door open and hustled around the car. I picked Margaret up and dusted her off. “Don’t worry about them.”
Margaret made a small noise in her throat.
I reached in and pulled out the backpack. I turned to Margaret, “you okay.”
Her usually cheerful smile was gone, “look,” she turned around, she had a big rip in her tights and a scrape on her calf.
