07.16. The Tube train is packed – I’m sandwiched between a tall man in a suit, a woman who seems to be transporting bamboo canes (is a rush-hour Tube really the place for that?) and a teenage girl with a studded rucksack (oww).

A bamboo cane digs into my upper thigh. At least one person is standing on my foot. I am studiously lowering my eyes because if I look up at the man whose chest is currently pressed against mine, I’ll end up nutting him.

I fix my gaze on the Tube map just visible between bodies – I’m getting off at the next stop, Oxford Circus, so this will all be over in about three minutes. Thank God.
