PREVIEW:

My name is Bill Jones, and a week ago I lost my job at WorldFi, a cubicle farm where I was wasting away under the fluorescent lights. Later that day, I found out my Uncle Danny had left me his motel in Delson Beach after he passed away.
I thought it was crazy at first. The idea of running a motel seemed way out of my comfort zone and overwhelming, but here I am.
Right now I’m pressure washing a beachside bar that is part of the motel. Doing smaller tasks like this keep that overwhelming feeling away, it’s good to stay busy.
I let go of the handle of the pressure washer and water stopped spraying. I exercised my hand, it was getting stiff holding that handle so the spray was as strong as possible.
I wiped the sweat off my brow. Tom, the brown cat that I’d found in the closet of the main office during my initial cleanout of the motel, trotted up to me, then flopped onto his side, staying in the shade, watching me. He thinks he’s my supervisor.
I turned the pressure washer off and looked at my work. The old wood of the bar didn’t look half bad. Some of it would need to be replaced and restained, but that wouldn’t be a problem. I knew the very cute owner of Taylor’s Hardware, a brunette named Kelly, and she could set me up with everything I needed for that job.
“You hungry, buddy?” I said to Tom the cat.
Meow!
I started toward the motel. I made the long walk to the front office and went to the closet behind the front desk. I grabbed a can of cat food, popped it open, and put it in Tom’s dish by the door. As soon as I popped that can he never left my side.
I watched the little guy as he ate his food like he was starving. As if I never fed him.
I sat down on the stool behind the counter. I was kinda hungry myself. I wanted to finish pressure washing the outdoor bar today, so I wouldn’t leave the motel. I went back to that closet and grabbed a bag of nacho cheese chips.
I sat back down on the stool behind the front desk and opened the bag, the strong smell of artificial cheese flavoring filled the room. I loved it. I ate chip after chip as I watched traffic roll by out the window.
Behind me, the air conditioner was clunking and clanging, but it was hanging on, keeping it relatively cool in the front office.
I had finished half of the small bag of chips when I saw a familiar white sedan pull into the lot and park near the front door. The driver of that luxury car stepped out, a sultry short-haired blonde MILF wearing a tight mint green sleeveless blouse, a short white skirt, and white sandals. Her tan legs looked great just below that white skirt. She wore a pair of dark sunglasses that hid her eyes, but she had a big smile on her face as she walked toward the door.
I had a smile on my face as well, that MILF was Sandra Kay, head realtor over at Ocean Properties, and the person who had helped me out more than anyone. Without her, I might’ve gotten overwhelmed and left, went back to a boring job back home.
Sandra opened the front door and walked in. “Hi there.”
“Hey, Sandra,” I said. “How’s your day going?”
“Good,” she said. “I was showing a condo just down the road and I thought I’d stop by.”
Tom stopped eating and curled around Sandra’s ankles. She bent over and scratched him under his chin, then he went back to eating.
“Glad you did,” I said. “I was just eating lunch, want some?” I held the bag out to her.
She carefully selected a chip, then chomped on it. She chewed, swallowed, then grinned at me, “What have you been up to?”
“Cleaning up the ba

Sandra pulled her sunglasses off and gave me a look. I don’t have any viewings scheduled for the rest of the day. Why don’t you take a quick shower and we can both take a long lunch.

I knew what that meant. We’d taken a long lunch before. I dropped my bag of chips on the counter and wrapped an arm around Sandra’s shoulder as we went out the front door and headed to my suite at the back
