    Just stuff it in, will you? Use both hands, the voice said. How can it be so hard to just get it in?

    Someone’s tent peg was giving them trouble. I looked out across the campsite but could not see who it was. The wide clearing was ringed with tents around a large central firepit that was being stocked with logs ready for the evening blaze. Trees stood all around us, green and thick in the height of the summer. Birds wheeled and murmured overhead against the pink sunset that bled across the sky. The air was warm and a light breeze wove through the trees.

    There were thirty or so tents in the clearing and people were stood outside them in small groups after the barbecue we had just finished. I had been invited to this weekend in the woods by a friend who had then been too ill to come. I had only discovered that when I arrived. I did not really know anyone and had mostly kept to myself besides a few small conversations with people who wandered too close.

    On the left side of the campsite from my tent stood a little bar that looked more like a small barn. The actual bar inside was several wooden palettes stood on end and nailed together with a long plank across the top. I made my way over and was given my red wine in a plastic glass. I did not need a drink but I had little else to do. I was trying to be social and not go to bed too early but after half an hour of standing in the barn bar having spoken to exactly two people I decided to neck my wine and call it a night. I had a book to get back to anyway.

    I unzipped my single-sleeper tent and ducked inside. The only things in here were my sleeping bag, the overnight bag and a bottle of water. I took my phone out and lay on top of the sleeping bag. I loaded up
