There wasn't far to go now, Cassidy knew, and her tired feet found a burst of energy at the journey's end. Winding her way through the woods tucked away in the northwest corner of the county was tough work. There were few trails that extended this far into the thick forest, so Cassidy was left with her GPS and compass to keep her from veering too far off course. It helped, too, when the destination was vague.

The anomaly was reported on Thursday, and she was sure that she would be late to the party. She still had classes the following morning, so it was Saturday before she could launch her expedition. Happily, she was alone.

She ran most days, and so she was fit, but even that regular exercise was no preparation for the thousand insults of a hike through the woods beyond the regular routes. Brambles tore at her, hidden animal warrens threatened to snap her ankle after her foot sank into them. Her phone was without signal and probably useless. No matter. She pushed deeper, further, knowing that the indicators of the thing's path would put it less than a half mile away now, on the other side of the ridge before her. She would have to find a way around and up, but her pace was more enthusiastic now that she was so close. She blocked out the voice that told her she really had no idea at all how close she might be.

There was a natural path left by a stream that looked as if it ran only after heavy rains. It curved around one side of the ridge, which gave Cass a look at the best way up she'd seen, steep but littered with small
