I sat back on the hard plastic seat at Taco Jack and took in all the delicious smells.
Every Thursday afternoon you could find me right here, at my favorite fast food place, in this exact booth. I loved Taco Jack, it was how I relaxed after a long day of class, a special treat.
“Order 44!” A girl called out.
I jumped up and went straight to the counter. “That’s me,” I said to the skinny girl, she looked like a high schooler. “Enjoy,” she said.
I glanced at the tray just to make sure my three tacos and loaded nachos were there. They were, and so was the large cup. I grabbed the tray and took it over to the drink fountain where I filled that big red and yellow cup with ice and lemon-lime soda. I grabbed a lid and made sure it snapped on tight to the top of the drink, then I grabbed a straw and stabbed it through the little X on the lid. Got it first try.
I went back to my booth, sat down, unwrapped a taco and picked it up. It didn’t just smell good, it looked good too. Taco Jack wasn’t like the other fast food places where it looks awesome on the commercial then when you get your item it looks like it was stepped on. No, Taco Jack’s tacos looked as good as they tasted, a golden crispy shell filled with meat, then cheese, then fresh lettuce, diced tomatoes, a little more cheese, and just enough sour cream. It was a thing of beauty, and it was all mine. I tilted my head to take a bite, but right before I got to that deliciousness I heard someone call my name.
“Hey, Davis!”
I looked up and saw Trent Wilson walking in, his shirt collar popped, his shorts way too short, and his sunglasses on top of his oily blonde hair. He sat down at my booth, uninvited.
“Hey, Trent,” I said, trying to put on a nice face.
“Dude,” he said. “I freaking love the nachos here, can I have one?”
I wanted to say no, I was sure I’d eat every taco and every single one of those nachos, but I said, “help yourself.”
“Thanks, bud,” Trent said, grabbing two nachos and shoving them in his face. Two!
I bit into my taco. It was good, but I felt like it would’ve been better a few minutes ago before Trent showed up.
I couldn’t believe my eyes when I saw Trent reaching for another nacho, but thankfully, right before he could grab it his phone rang.
“Aww, crap,” Trent said. “It’s my mom.”
Good. A distraction.
“Hey, Mom,” Trent said.
I tried to ignore him and focus on all this delicious food in front of me, but Trent quickly raised his voice, practically shouting.
“I told you, Mother! I can’t do every little thing you ask! I won’t do it! Stop asking!”
I rolled my eyes, just this morning Trent had asked me about a million questions regarding the economics assignment.
He finally hung up. People were looking at him. I was embarrassed.
“Jeez,” Trent said. “My Mom won’t shut up about doing her taxes. She started this home business and she wants help with the program, so stupid. She just—”
Trent stopped mid-sentence, his eyes lighting up. He lifted a finger and pointed it right in my face, almost touching my taco. Way too close, a complete violation of my personal space. But he did it anyway.
“You,” he said.

I swallowed my delicious bite of taco confused, Me?

Yes, you, Trent said. Davis, you’re an accounting major, you can bang that program out in your sleep and get my mom off my back. Yes! Problem solved!

Whoa, whoa, whoa, I said. I’m taking eighteen hours this semester and I’m trying to get a few shifts at the grocery store, Trent. I can’t take on anything else.

So skip the grocery store, my mom will pay you.

    I wasn’t so sure.

But Trent grabbed his phone and called his Mom right back. Yeah, Mom, he said. I figured it out, this genius accounting student, a real buddy of mine named Davis is gonna fix you right up. He’s awesome. Yeah. Okay. Bye.

    Crap.

Trent put his phone away and grinned, he grabbed another nacho and chomped it. Thanks, man, he said, chewing loudly. I owe you.

You already owe me for econ homework, I said.
