I sat in the large waiting room and went over the lines again. The character for the role was voluptuous, which I definitely was not. I had a small waist and big hips with a big butt but nothing on top to even me out. My ex-boyfriend used to call my breasts the bee stings which was about right since they weren’t even a full A cup.

I was auditioning for Jazz, the foul-mouthed main character who takes down the Detroit mafia from the inside. Based on the script alone, I knew it was going to be a hit. It didn’t hurt that the producer and director were the same ones who did Motown Blues, the movie that broke all sorts of box office records and was now getting Oscar buzz. I could feel in my bones that this part was written for me.

The women in the room with me were more of the same old faces; Zoe, who beat me out for a dishwashing detergent commercial, Tiffany, who got a recurring role on Empire, Lizette, the video vixen and all the other usual brown girls I saw whenever I went on a big casting call.

Kelli Graves, the casting associate called out.

I stood up and took a deep breath before walking into the room to greet the team.

Whenever you’re ready, the casting associate said.

I closed my eyes for a moment and went deep into myself. I prepared by practicing this monologue a few different ways and thought that by playing Jazz with a little vulnerability, it added some depth to her character. I launched into my monologue and was surprised when everyone in the room applauded.
