Sal never rubbed it into his brother’s or sister’s face that the pizza parlor and restaurant was going to be inherited by him. His brother and sister got fancy educations paid for by their parents, but Sal liked the city feel and how it was while working with his father in the pizza parlor. It had been in the family for three generations, and he would be the fourth. Not only was it a great money maker but it was also listed as a landmark and the property was owned by them and not leased. The building had five apartments above the pizza parlor and restaurant and was in a prime location too. Between the pizza, restaurant and rent, Sal knew his parents were loaded.

At twenty-five, the city had a lot to offer in the way of a nightlife and atmosphere of watching celebrities and the wealthy Wall Street executives walk in and act like normal people. The restaurant was an afterthought, and his mother ran it while the pizza parlor was the real draw for people as it was always listed as one of the best pizza places in the country. The money it brought in was enough that Sal turned down high priced colleges to keep the business going. He also knew that college was not for him, and he enjoyed making money.

Although he knew he was going to take over and that he was the owner’s son, Sal still had to clean up like the rest of the workers. His father Marius was not one to let his son get off easy and Sal knew that he had to prove that he was worthy of taking over. The pizza parlor was a small place that had seating for only twenty people, and it was attached by a door to the back of the restaurant that his mother ran so she could have something to do. Sometimes if the restaurant was busy Sal would have to work there but only if someone called in sick.

Working in a famous place had its benefits but Sal never let it really get to his head. The parlor had pictures all over the place of famous people who came in to eat and he loved that he would be the person in charge of the place after. The line was always long from the time they opened the doors until closing. There was a constant stream of customers and the price per slice was not cheap either. He also knew the employees were as loyal as you could get, and his father paid quite well to keep them happy.

He was there when his father hired Laci and brought her in introducing her. She was almost homeless when his father gave her a job. He said she was carrying bags not asking for food but looking for food in the trash. He knew his father had a big heart for people down on their luck and Laci struck a nerve with him and offered her the job right there.

Laci was not overly tall but not short either as she was an inch shorter than him at five foot ten. She was cute in a way but dressed in the same baggy jeans and loose work shirt with an apron that covered her chest. He could tell that she was smaller than a D cup but bigger than a B or so he thought. He always knew it was hard to tell because she always had the apron on. He did see her ass a few times and liked how it had a round curve to it and was thin like her hips. Her voice was deep but not too deep, always sounding commanding or bitchy depending upon what she was saying.

She kept her black hair shoulder length covered in a hairnet and had multiple earrings in both ears and on the top of her ears too. He wondered if she had tattoos, but none were visible. Sal tried to talk to her, but she was always either busy or not wanting to talk much for fear that she would be seen as goofing off. He did know that she loved how much she was being paid to just clean up and then tips were enough that a waiter in a high class restaurant would be jealous.

It was two months in, and he could tell she was always nervous about being fired. Sal thought it was funny at first but them felt sad as she never felt comfortable around him or his father. He wanted to tell her a few times that his father believed that his workers were family. He talked about her always in a good way and knew that she had more job security than she knew of. Laci busted her ass working and knew that she was a perfect fit and that his dad loved her work ethic. She was not just cleaning up and was able to do everything including work the ovens.

Sal was the only person that his mother needed to work in the restaurant if things got busy but, on a few occasions, she would ask Juan who only did clean up to do the same. Nobody ever turned down his mother’s need for help as the pay was worth it and they knew that loyalty paid off with his parents.

The pizza parlor was closing, and he saw his mother walk back as he knew that she was going to ask him to stay late and help out. Once she got to him, he threw his apron on the counter giving her a look. How late do you want me?

Just for a few hours. I have Susan coming in late. The only problem is Jackie called in too. Do you think that new girl would help out for an hour or two?

He looked at his mother and shrugged his shoulder as he didn’t know if she would since she was so quiet. Maybe, I will ask.

When his mother walked back, he saw Laci coming out of the back still wearing her apron and ready to leave. He knew she took the bus home every night and tried to leave at the same time every day. He knew she probably still needed the money since it was only a few months since his father gave her a job.

My mother needs help. She asked me to ask you if you want to stay and help out.

She had a scared look on her
