    Any moment now, Ben thought as he stared into the white void outside his window. The radio behind him hissed softly. He sipped his coffee. An hour ago he had gotten word that the helicopter carrying his new partner had entered into Queen Maud Land's territory. The next transmission would no doubt be announcing touchdown. He felt a strange mix of tension and relief at the whole business. For one, he had gotten used to the Antarctic solitude—or so he told himself—and didn't exactly want any disruptions of his routine. But on the other hand, company would be nice, as would some extra help at the station. And there was safety in numbers, too.

    It all depends on how she is, I guess he thought to himself. On paper, his new partner seemed alright, if a little inexperienced: Melody Dirkes, age 19, graduate of Helsinki University, IQ of 192. He suspected her genius-level IQ would make up for her lack of experience, but he also knew that it could just as easily cause other problems.

    Hopefully she's not stuck-up.

    If she is, well. . .

    Even with her IQ and accomplishments at the university, he wondered why they had chosen her, specifically.
