Todd stared out the window, sinking back into his desk-chair, listless. Outside, the sun shown over the glittering sea and the bright, calm beach. Todd could hear wind-chimes in the distance, mingled with the sound of the surf and the occasional passing car.

He looked at the computer screen. There was one reservation—a Ms. Maja Katjakowski. She had been due to arrive an hour ago, but there had been no sign of her. No call. No anything.

Todd cracked his knuckles then picked up a magazine. He had been in Fiji for a month now. Though born and raised in Ohio, he knew he had to escape his hometown. And since he liked tropical places, he decided on Fiji.

The move wasn't easy. He stayed in a hotel for the first two weeks, looking for apartments and jobs. He found an apartment in his price-range, but the landlord told him he needed to pay his 6-month lease in advance. Those are the rules if you don't have a job, the landlord said. So Todd paid.

Finding a job was just as difficult at first, but his face and English skills got him a job at a desk-clerk at a modest resort. The pay was dreadful—minimum wage, with a meager insurance plan—but it was enough to survive on.

And that's what Todd wanted to do:
