    I pulled into the drive going a little too fast, cutting the wheel hard to the left and causing the tires to squeal on the pavement. Slow down! I thought. Kevin’s birthday cake almost slid off the front seat and into the floor! I jammed the car in ‘park’, picked up the box containing the three layer fudge brownie cake, and leaving the engine running I hurried up the walk to the front door of the condo I shared with my husband of five years. I balanced the cake box in one hand like a waitress and had started to insert the key into the deadbolt with the other. Instead, the door swung open before me. The door was open! Alarmed, I stood rooted to the spot, mind racing.

    Was there a burglar inside? Maybe Kevin or I had failed to close and lock the door when we had left that morning? Heart pounding in my throat I debated my next move. My cellphone was in my purse which was in my car –should I go back and get it? Do the smart thing, call the police? I glanced back over my shoulder.
