CHAPTER 1

Sarah tore the envelope open carefully so as not to tear the contents and pulled out her pay stub. The amount was disappointingly small. Too small to pay for more than another night, definitely not another week, in the shabby motel she had been living in for the past two months. Her eyes burned, brimming with tears that she fought to hold back. Running her hands through tangled auburn hair, she opened her pale blue eyes wide, tilted her head back and looked at the ceiling blinking rapidly – that used to always work to keep the tears at bay, but not this time. A floodgate had been opened and her hopeless tears overran their banks and flowed down her cheeks.

Leaving Russ had put Sarah in her current situation. That much was fact. But she’d had no other options, none! She reminded herself of this every morning when she awoke tired and weary after too little sleep and every evening when she collapsed into a too soft bed allowing exhaustion to finally overtake her. Yes, it was a tough situation but….a shiver ran down her spine racking her entire body as she remembered the night she left.
