    Romance

Michelle felt the wine relax her, but also felt the seeds of doubt cloud her mind once again. Wine was her weakness when it came to wondering about her marriage and she knew the feeling was not going to go away, but still wished it would. Second-guesses were now mixed with ‘never agains’ as she dropped the empty bottle in the garbage. It was the drink of loneliness she felt, and tonight was just another one of many lonely nights.

Her mind went to her husband Robert as she navigated the steps to the cellar for another bottle to open. Tonight was a long night, and more wine was needed for her to contemplate the wrong deeds of her husband and why she hated marriage. It wasn't just the comments that stung, but the lack of him being there too. The promise of him coming home was gone as it would be next week when he got back.

Her eyes drifted to her waist and then her stomach wondering if she got too fat for him or that her ass was not what he wanted. The lingerie she wore did nothing to turn him on and the offering of strange sexual deeds stirred nothing down below for him other than a look of boredom; and that was when he was home. The text messages he sent were cold and only dealing with issues about the house and business.

It was two weeks now since she last saw him and she wondered what business would take a man away for that long, then again, she knew the loneliness was a comfort to him ignoring her in person. The last time they had sex was forgotten but she knew it was more than four months. She also knew it could be longer than that too. Bringing it up was only him explaining about the stress of work and his boring performance was blamed on being tired.

She knew Robert was not an evil man, and he never laid a finger on her. Although sometimes she wished he did, as the excuse to leave him for that would be easier to explain to people. He wasn't a cheater, although she was thinking that she could be wrong on that assumption now as that was all she thought about.

Wanting the abuses of Robert to be put in a nice, neat box was not as easy as she thought. Self-doubt now filled that box as she wondered if it wasn't him but her. Being ignored she felt was not abuse nor being neglected sexually; or was it? What was so wrong with her that he didn't want to touch her? Was she bad at sex, or was it something she didn't do for him? Her mind fluttered with questions as the wine began to flow into her glass and into her body.

The only thing she could recall in vivid detail was the comment about her body. Robert’s comment that she could lose a few was like a knife in her heart. It was in the abuse column she thought as she recalled telling him about the struggles she had with anorexia. Why would he bring it up knowing that she struggled to keep a set weight when she modeled and that keeping track of her weight was always a personal demon for her?

Holding onto the railing coming back up the stairs, Michelle second-guessed her choice of having the second bottle of wine. The sensation of being overly drunk hit her as her foot barely got to the top step. She wondered then if Robert would have even caught her if he was home and she fell. She knew the real problem with Robert was him not being there, but then knew when he was there his mind was not.

She made her way to the table sitting down and looking at the empty bottle and then the full bottle of wine. She thought about how Robert was when they were dating. He was charming, wealthy, and had just started working at the investment firm. His flashy sports car and his over the top dates were like a fairy tale. She knew she fell for the ideal of a lifestyle of wealth and privilege like she was living one of her fairy tales.

Her eyes then drifted to the empty bottle and thought about all the lonely nights as he spent all day at the office and almost never came home now. The house was a showpiece on the weekends when he was home, and if she did want to see him, it was her visiting him at his apartment in the city that he stayed at during the week. The long commute was too much for him and the house was more of a weekend resort. She felt she was just like the house, a showpiece to be displayed when needed.

The effects of the wine were making her stagger to bed as she thought about how she was going to sleep alone and be alone. She looked at her wedding ring and tossed it across the room as it reminded her that Robert was not there to give her what she wanted. He promised her a family and she knew her hormones for having a child were kicking in and Robert was not around to tend to those needs. She calculated it just right and this weekend was the perfect
