PREVIEW:

Earl Thompson sat down in his easy chair right by the big window. He needed a nap, he’d only had one so far today. He usually took two, then he’d stay up late watching reruns on TV.
Earl looked out the window at the neighborhood. Things sure had changed in all the years he’d lived here. He moved here with his dearly departed wife, Edna, almost sixty years ago. Earl himself was nearly eighty.
Back then every house in the neighborhood was a modest, ranch-style single-level home like his. Now, every single one of them had been torn down and replaced by one of them McMansions, and a golf course had been built behind all the houses. All that did was raise the value of the property, which wasn’t a bad thing. But Earl wasn’t gonna sell, this was his house, and he liked it, and he’d stay here till the end.
During his reminiscing, Earl had closed his eyes, imagining all the good-ole-days. He was just about to drift off when the doorbell rang.
Earl’s eyes popped open.
It rang again.
“I’m comin’, I’m comin’,” Earl pushed himself out of the chair with a big groan. His knees popped as he walked to the door. He swung it open as the bell rang again.
“Hello, Mr. Thompson,” said a way too cheerful voice.
“Well hello, Mrs. Kenner.”
The Kenners had lived next door for a while now, maybe a decade or so, it was hard to keep track. Mr. Kenner was some kinda fancy stock trader guy, Mrs. Kenner was a neurotic squirrel of a woman, and their one daughter was a teenager.
“Mr. Thompson, I hate to bother you, but I need a favor.”
Earl eyed the plate of chocolate chip cookies in Mrs. Kenner’s hands. Must be a big favor.
“What can I do for you, Mrs. Kenner?”
“Well, Mr. Kenner and I are going on a big vacation for our anniversary, a nice beach trip to an all-inclusive resort and spa.”
“Sounds nice,” Earl said. He’d taken Edna to one of those once, it was a rip-off.
“Yes, well. It came about on short notice and I can’t find anyone to stay with Kensie.”
“Kensie?”
“Our daughter.”
Earl nodded. “Right.”
“And I was just hoping that maybe you’d watch her this weekend, she’s a really good girl, not much trouble at all.”
Earl had done a lot of jobs in his life, ironworker, construction, he even cleaned the bottom of boats when he lived in Florida, but not once had he been a babysitter.
“Mrs. Kenner, I just don’t know about—”
“Oh look, she’s just getting back.”
A blue car pulled up to the curb next door and stopped. Mrs. Kenner shoved the cookie plate into Earl’s hands and started waving both her arms over her head. A neurotic squirrel of a woman.
“Mrs. Kenner, I—” Earl repeated.
Then he stopped mid-sentence when Kensie Kenner stepped out of her car. In his mind, Earl pictured Kensie as a thirteen or fourteen-year-old goofy-looking kid with bushy brown hair. It must’ve been a lot longer since the last time he saw Kensie, because she was clearly a young woman now, fully developed.
Kensie stepped out into the summer sun and her tan body just glowed. She’d grown quite a bit. She was tall now, taller than Earl, and she had an angelic face with a thick mane of blonde hair. As she walked closer, Earl couldn’t help but smile at the annoyed look on the young lady’s face. If he had to deal with a woman like Mrs. Kenner on a daily basis he’d be quite annoyed himself.
“Hi, Mom,” Kensie said.
“You remember Mr. Thompson,” Mrs. Kenner said.
Kensie stepped closer to the door so she could see Earl. She smiled, a dazzling white smile. Kens
