PREVIEW:
It had been a long, tiresome day of class. I was shuffling my feet, slumping my shoulders, and barely even making it down the sidewalk, the load of books heavy on my back. It was my second semester at college, Ford State University, and I was trying my best to make up for my lackluster performance the first semester. That meant going to every class, studying, and skipping parties. Easier said than done.
I made it to the corner of the Quad and pressed the button that made the light change so I could cross the street. Then I looked both ways and realized it was so late that there was no traffic. I shook my head and grinned. I had definitely spent way too much time in the library, and the computer lab, and the quiet corner of my apartment. But I wanted to get my grades up to at least a B average.
I snapped myself out of the hazy zone I was in and stepped off the curb. Just when I put my foot on the opposite sidewalk I heard an engine rev dangerously high, followed by the awful screech of tires, then a slamming door.
Before I could even turn around, hands were on me, gripping my arms like steel cuffs, at least four of them. I tried to wrench myself away, but then two more sets of hands grabbed my legs.
I looked at my kidnappers, all dressed in black with black ski masks. My heart started pumping. I was being kidnapped!
I saw the open door of the dingy van idling at the curb. I started to fight, jerking my arms back and forth, kicking and pulling my legs, but these men were strong and it felt like I was trying to swim through Jell-O. They wouldn’t relax their grips and we all went into the back of the van.
That’s when it got really weird.
We’ve all seen the backs of those kidnapper vans. They aren’t always used by kidnappers, and the ones I’ve seen were usually just empty back there, no carpet, no seats, no panels on the walls, no headliner. Not this one. This one had more buttons inside than an F1 racecar, it was more sophisticated than an airplane cockpit. I stopped struggling for a moment just to look at it all.
The men tossed me in the back and I was already twisting in the air, readying myself to attack them, but as soon as I hit the floor of the van I was stuck. I couldn’t lift my head or my arms or my legs. I couldn’t lift a finger. It wasn’t sticky, I was just frozen, like some imaginary forcefield was holding down every inch of me.
I heard the men talking, and my heart really started thumping when I realized they weren’t talking. They were communicating with each other, but it wasn’t English, or Spanish, or German, or any other language I had ever heard. It was a series of clicks and pops and humming sounds.
As far as I could move my eyes I saw them all sit in various places on these tiny little stools that seemed to come out of the control panels around the van.
Then we started moving. This was no ordinary van. Just by feel, I could tell we were accelerating hard. This thing was moving, then it started to shake, to the point I thought it might come apart. If it did come apart I couldn’t decide if that would be bad or good for me. It didn’t, and all of a sudden it smoothed out to perfection. I knew what that meant, we were in the air.
I guess all the men felt safe now that we were in the air because they all took off their masks. I could really only see two of them, but that was enough. They had gray skin, like lizards, giant oval eyes as dark as night, and tiny slits for a mouth, and even tinier slits for nostrils. The neck was so small I was surprised

    I guess all the men felt safe now that we were in the air because they all took off their masks. I could really only see two of them, but that was enough. They had gray skin, like lizards, giant oval eyes as dark as night, and tiny slits for a mouth, and even tinier slits for nostrils. The neck was so small I was surprised it could hold up the head. I was also surprised at their strength now that I got a good look at their small bodies. Maybe it wasn’t strength, maybe it was just technology, like whatever was holding me to the floor in such an awkward position. I managed to land sideways with my arms and legs out like I was in mid-stride, but my head was looking up at the ceiling of the van, which was the only part without buttons and shining lights and things like that.

    I looked over at one of the gross little alien guys as best I could and asked, where are you taking me?

    I got all the clicks and pops and hums that made up their language, but the alien held up a hand as if to say, wait one second. He picked up a long loop of string with a metal box that looked like a speaker. He put it around his enormous head and struggled to get it down past his nubby ears. When he finally had it on, he coughed—I think—but then he spoke in clear, perfect English.

    We are taking you to our holding ship where you will be prisoner.

    I figured it was something like that, so I said, okay.

    He seemed truly shocked, as shocked as those non-expressive faces could get. But what else could it be? I knew they were aliens. I knew they had abducted me, so what comes next. I gulped…the probe.

    The one I was talking to turned back around to monitor something and press buttons. I stayed where I was, thinking. The last thing I wanted was to get probed. I had heard all the stories and thought they were all totally fake. I didn’t believe in aliens or any of this stuff, but here I was.

    At some point, they’d have to take me off this giant sticky pad, and when they did I had a plan. Fight. Like. Hell.

    * * *

    This was my moment. I felt a big lurch as the van parked or docked or whatever. I heard some of the aliens getting up and walking over to me. I took slow, controlled breaths. I tensed up, pulling against the invisible forcefield that held me, as soon as it let me go I was fighting.

    I heard the clicks and pops and hums of the alien language. A button was pressed and immediately I was free. I didn’t waste my opportunity. I clenched my fist and swung it at the first little guy. I hit him right in the head. His head was incredibly soft and he went flying into a panel of buttons and he even cracked a small screen. That made me happy.

    Another one jumped on my back and one grabbed my legs and started twisting. I reached over my head and seized the alien on my back by his collar and went to fling him off, but his hands were under my arms, locked onto me like steel chains. I pulled until it felt like something in my shoulder was going to rip out, but I couldn’t budge him. Two more had been standing back, but they made their move now, grabbing my legs with that superhuman strength.

    How?

    I kept struggling and squirming, but it was no use, they had me again and the guy I’d thrown into the wall opened the back doors. He had a bit of a dent in his head so I thought of him as Dent from then on.

    They carried me through a doorway and down a long, gray hall, it was the plainest hall I’d ever seen, solid gray with a light every six feet or so on the ceiling. We came to a door. Dent pushed a button and it slid open. The aliens tossed me in and I landed hard on the solid ground. I jumped up but as soon as I turned around the door closed. I ran to it and when I felt along it I couldn’t feel a seam anywhere.

    I don’t know why I was trying to do it in the dark, I had my cell phone. I pulled it out and turned on the flashlight. I only had 26% battery, that wasn’t good. I also had no service, but that wasn’t much of a surprise. I examined the surface of the door, it felt like plastic, but it was extremely strong. I banged on it with my fist, kicked it with my boots, and even ran into it shoulder first. Nothing. It didn’t even budge.

    I looked all around the room with my flashlight and saw nothing, just hard floor, walls, and a smooth ceiling. I went to the corner and sat down so I could watch the door and think about my next move.

    Fighting these guys worked for all of two seconds, then they came at me with that superstrength and it was all over. I wondered how they did it. They certainly didn’t have impressive physiques, but that didn’t matter, these were aliens, a different species from different worlds. Who knew what was underneath that gray reptilian skin.

    I turned my phone off. I could use the clock at least, somehow it was still working. I leaned against the wall and closed my eyes. This all would’ve never happened if I hadn’t been studying so hard. That made me smile. If only I had just been at a party, then I’d be safe and sound. But no, I was kidnapped by aliens. I wondered why they wanted me. Was it just because I was alone and happened to be where they were looking? I could wonder forever and never get an answer, so I tried to quiet my mind and relax. I had a feeling I’d be needing my rest, and what good would freaking out do?

    * * *

    When I woke up, for half a second I thought I was in a school cafeteria. The place just had that smell, indescribable. Then my senses came back to me and I remembered everything.

    The door popped open and there was Dent, holding a small black box. He put it on the ground, nudged it with his foot, and then the door closed.

    I jumped up and ran to the door. I knew I had seen it open, but again, any seam or hinge was gone, somehow molded into the plastic. Dent had been wearing the same thing, that black suit. This time I noticed it was all one piece, like a onesie for kids.

    I looked down at the black box. It looked like a jewelry box. I picked it up. It was smooth and warm, there was a tiny button at the front and when I pressed it the lid popped open. The inside of the box was red. There was a round brown thing in there and two long green things. I touched one of the green things. It was cool and slightly wet.
