It was just past midday as a black Mercedes drove up the winding road. Near the top of the hill was an imposing wall with a security gate at the end of the road. On the other side, right at the hill’s summit, stood a large building painted almost entirely white.

It looked like just another luxury house. They were still in California, but the car had been driving for an hour into the wilderness until they could see the desert. This sprawling mansion was in the middle of nowhere, and its location was kept out of the public domain.

As the Mercedes approached, a sensor scanned the license plate and the security gate opened automatically. The car drove on through, slowing down and turning onto a roundabout as it approached the front of the house.

In the middle of the roundabout was a gorgeous fountain shaped like a bowl and decorated with carvings of cherubs. In the middle was a plinth with a carved statue of a man and a woman intertwined in naked union.

The car stopped in front of the house and the driver climbed out, dressed in a crisp suit and wearing dark sunglasses. She walked to the passenger side and opened the door.
