About this ebook

Bradley Gordon, at the age of three, finds himself moving in next door to a little blonde girl his age named Gina McDonald. From the very beginning, there is something special about their friendship. Something that even years of friendship leave him powerless to explain to anyone.
Despite being close, they remain only friends until their senior year in high school, when Gina is physically assaulted by a politically connected football player bully in the halls of their high school.

Brad has no choice but to intervene to protect not only his best friend, but the girl he has been secretly in love with for years. The consequences of that decision create havoc for Brad, Gina, their families, and even their tormentors. Those consequences become even more trying when Brad’s hot-tempered and foul-mouthed father intervenes on his behalf, assisted by the friendly neighborhood police officer.

Gina’s father, Angus McDonald, a rough-and-tumble Scottish emigrant to America who has become a local business legend, adds much to this rich mix of characters.

    Chapter One ̶

    The Je ne sais quoi

As my lunch period wound down, I dreaded getting back to class. My next class was Spanish, a class I absolutely sucked at.

A few weeks ago, when I brought home my last report card, I watched my disappointed dad survey my grades from top to bottom. A crestfallen look was fixed on his face until finally he broke the silence.

Hey, this Spanish grade is really encouraging, he drily noted.

It is? I asked, genuinely bewildered by his comment.

Yeah, at this rate, by the end of the year, you’ll be bi-illiterate. He handed me my report card, with his signature scrawled disappointingly onto the bottom of it. He returned to reading his newspaper.

I turned and shuffled for my room. My dad didn’t see it, but my face broke into a smile. Even when he insulted the hell out of me, he cracked me up.

As I headed toward Spanish class, I was running through all the phrases Gina had helped me memorize the night before in preparation for the oral quiz we were going to be doing in class.

Gina was the girl next door. Literally. We had lived next door to her since I was three years old. I still vividly remembered the first day I saw her.

There’s still a short stockade-style fence between our yards, just perfect for a three- year-old to climb up a plank or two in order to make you feel taller. When I went out into the backyard for the first time with my older brother, I saw this little blonde girl with pigtails standing on the second rung of the fence waving excitedly at us.

Hi! she yelled in her shrill little-girl voice.

Oh, great! A girl! my older brother Eric had sneered. He turned and stormed back in the house to avoid having to talk to the little girl.

I remember shyly walking over to the fence, and climbing up to the second rung opposite her. I didn’t want her to be taller than me. We came nearly face to face on the fence.

    Hi! My name’s Gina!

I’m Bradley. Everyone calls me Brad, I told her.

Where did you come from? she asked.

California, I told her, my voice sounding sad. I missed the little pink frame house we had moved from in Riverside, and especially missed all my friends.

I’ve lived here all my life! Gina said proudly. My mommy and da moved here from Scotland before I was born. I had no idea what a da was.

    Where is Scotland? I asked.

I don’t know, she admitted. But it’s a long way from here.

How old are you? I asked.

I’m this many, I told her, holding up three fingers.

I’m three too! Gina’s voice was bright and excited.

I remember, even at three, being nervous around her. There was something about her. It took until high school when one of my friends taking French told me about a cool new phrase he had learned in class.

Je ne sais quoi. He told me it means a certain something, or I don’t know what. You know, when you have that person that does something for you, but you’re just at a loss for words to explain what that something is.

Well that’s a Je ne sais quoi.

In my case, even at three years old, I saw that in Gina.

Will you be my friend? Gina asked me with a smile.

Yeah, I guess, I replied, mustering up as much enthusiasm as a three-year-old could when faced with the prospect of only having
