I heard the vicious peal of thunder just above and looked out the window when I saw it: a blinding flash of light that struck a transformer just in front of my house. Holy shit! Sparks flew everywhere, the lights flickered for just a second and then...silence; all the power in the whole neighborhood shut off, leaving only the pouring rain for sound.

Luckily, I was prepared for just such an eventuality and had my Mag-Lite near me.
