    Chapter One

Campbell Burke looked over at his wife and gave an exasperated sigh right after the girl walked out of the house. Over the past three days, they had interviewed 20 different girls recommended by the agency that was helping them to find a surrogate to carry their baby. The last girl clearly wouldn’t do. Her looks were bad to the point of being distracting, and since their surrogate would be the biological mother of the baby, they were insisting on an attractive girl for the role. He wouldn’t have minded if they hadn’t made themselves clear to the agency what they, since they had had several real dogs sent over.

Mackenzie Burke looked back at him with a dismayed look.

This is almost done. Just a couple of more, Her voice had a tinge of desperation to it.

The next time, we need to insist that they send photographs over as well, Campbell suggested.

That might help. Between the looks and our ‘special requirements’ we haven’t had so much as a single candidate that’s worth a shit, Mackenzie said dejectedly.

The Special Requirements Mackenzie mentioned had been a show-stopper for several of the candidates. Both Campbell and Mackenzie had an aversion to producing a baby in a test tube. They opted for a more natural approach used by some families with their surrogates. They were asking their surrogates to agree to conceive their baby in the old-fashioned way, which would involve them having sex with Campbell. Several of the potential surrogates had husbands or boyfriends and felt that would complicate the situation for them too much.

Mackenzie’s infertility was as the result of an infection in one of her ovaries that led to a botched surgery. The surgeon incorrectly removed the wrong ovary, leaving the infected one in, and removing the healthy one. Surprisingly the infection subsided in the infected ovary, and it wasn’t removed. However, after the surgery, she was told that the remaining damaged ovary would never produce eggs. She was totally and irrevocably infertile.

    That
