Jeff Clark, a successful writer, husband and father of two little girls, is shocked when he is suddenly presented with a wife who informs him that she needs time away from him to “find herself.”

Given an opportunity to take a week off and decompress at the beach with his little girls, he decides that he can only make the trip with the help of his family’s long-time babysitter, Jennifer Lee.

Jennifer, the daughter of Chinese family in Mark’s neighborhood, agrees to accompany Jeff on the trip to assist with wrangling the two energetic little girls. Jeff, with his life in a shambles, soon finds a sympathetic soul in the young Chinese babysitter.

See what happens to Jeff, Jennifer and a host of other characters as they deal with a relationship changing from professional to personal, and the consequences that arise from that change.

    Chapter One

I just need some space, until I can found out what I want to do.

I was dumbfounded when I heard my wife telling me this. I remember hearing a comedian who, as part of his act, went over the common break up lines used by women with their husbands and boyfriends. His schtick was to say right after each line what the woman really meant.

In this case what I just need some space really meant was without you in it.

For some time, I had sensed that our marriage was becoming a bit strained. My wife, Alexandra, or Alex as she preferred to be called, had gotten absorbed in her job to the point that she scarcely came home during daylight hours. When she was at home, all she could do was talk about her job. She was excited by her new career as a financial analyst, and she appeared to idolize her boss. She talked about him almost as much as her job.

That being the case, I thought it was good she hadn’t used one of the comedian’s other lines. I was glad she hadn’t said, I think we need to see other people.

The comedian said that that meant, if she hasn’t already ridden that horse, she’s probably at least tried the saddle on it, and at the very least has cut another pony out of the herd.

But I was instantly suspicious that this decision to find herself came just a few days before a weeklong conference that several people from her company were going to in Las Vegas. That entourage included the boss that she worshipped.

I was more than just a little suspicious.

Then she dropped the real bombshell.

I think until I get this figured out, that it would be best if you stayed somewhere else for a while.

Seriously? I thought to myself. Steam formed in my head I was so livid, and I expected it to start gushing out of my ears.

You want to find yourself, and you can’t do it with me around? was what I asked instead.

    Yes, she said matter-of-factly.

I have a better idea, my voice was matter-of-fact, emotionless and blunt.

Obviously, what your looking for isn’t here. You have a husband and two daughters here, I began, somehow able to keep my voice from quivering with rage.

Why don’t YOU find someplace else to stay until you get your shit together, I told her. "I’ll stay and take care of the girls, since I’m the only
