She had to laugh. Then she thought about which of her friends might be able to drop everything on a twelve-hour notice and jet off to Cancun for a week.
Most of her friends were teachers, or caterers, or lawyers; girls that couldn’t just drop everything and run. Then she thought of Katie.
Katie was a freelance writer. She usually kept two or three romance novels in the works at any time, and also delved in writing a blog and a newspaper column giving sex advice. From her conversations with the girls, it was pretty clear that Katie had an active nocturnal life.
Lisa pulled up her contact on her iPhone and called her number.
“Hello?” Katie’s groggy voice answered. “This better be good!”
“Katie, this is Lisa. Did I wake you?” she asked.
“At this uncivilized hour? Of course you woke me up!” Katie shot back.
“Well, I’m sorry I woke you up, but this couldn’t wait,” Lisa said. “What do you have plans for the next week?”
“Well...the usual, banging away on my keyboard. Why?” Katie said.
“Is that something you could do from Cancun?” Lisa asked.
“Given the advances in technology, yeah. But why do you ask?” Katie asked.
“Mark and I had a trip planned, but his dickhead boss won’t let him go,” Lisa offered.
“And?” Katie asked.
“Would you like to go with me?” Lisa asked plaintively.
“How much would this cost?” Katie asked.
“Hey, it’s on Mark’s dickhead boss’ tab. He paid for the trip and then wouldn’t let him go. It’s on him,” Lisa told her.
“This is sounding real promising!” Katie asked. “What resort in Cancun?”
“I don’t know, let me check,” Lisa responded. She looked at the paperwork.
“Some place called Desires,” Lisa continued.
“Really?” said Katie with a sneer in her voice.
“Yeah, really. Why?” Lisa queried.
“Honey, Desires in an interesting place. It is divided in two. Half of it is a pretty normal resort, and the other half is clothing optional. It’s really popular with swingers,” Katie told her.
“You’re kidding!” Lisa gasped.
“No. But don’t worry, your reservations are probably for the tame half. But either way, count me in!” Katie said.
“Really?” Lisa asked.
“Sure. I’ve been there before. They don’t exactly have guards to keep you from going from the tame side to the wild side,” she explained in a deadpan voice.
“Katie!” Lisa exclaimed.
Katie laughed. “What time do we leave?”
“I’ll pick you up at six,” Lisa told her.
As she hung up the phone, she wondered what the week would bring her.

Thursday Morning,

Dallas, Texas

Babe, I have a problem. My boss wants me to deliver a pitch on Monday for a big contract. He won’t take no for an answer, Mark said.

But we’re leaving for Cancun tonight! Lisa cried out.

Babe, I’m sorry. He pretty much made it clear that I can do the pitch, or I can look for another job, Mark said.

Lisa slammed the phone down on the hook in frustration, disconnecting the call.

She cried bitterly as she thought about what to do. Her husband had won this trip for being the top-producing salesman in his company, but now his son-of-a-bitch boss wouldn’t give him the time off the take the trip. That was just like that bottom-line clinging bastard.

The phone rang again. Undoubtedly Mark. She hit the answer button and then immediately hit the disconnect button. She didn’t’ want to talk right now.

She really looked forward to this trip to try to get re-connected with Mark. She loved him, but they had been having a lot of problems. His workaholic tendencies were exacerbated by his boss, the asshole. As a result of the stress he was under at work, he had been placed on blood-pressure medicine at the ripe old age of 32.

They had been trying to start a family for two years now. After the blood pressure medicine came into play, Mark had trouble gaining and maintaining an erection. While they still had a sex life, it was perfunctory and boring, and now punctuated by the need to schedule it around both Mark’s work and the physician diagnosed need for a one-hour delay between when his Viagra was taken and when it took effect.

The text alert went off on Lisa’s phone. She glanced down and saw this message from Mark:

Why don’t you go without me

and have a good time?
