Samantha wasn’t even aware she was tapping a fingernail nervously against her front teeth as she stared at the poster on the waiting room wall. She read through the instructions about stopping the spread of germs, without really taking them in, and only pulled her hand away from her mouth when she heard her husband’s voice.

What’s taking so long? Greg hissed. We should have been in to see the doctor already.

The doctor will see you now, the receptionist said.

Samantha forced a smile onto her face to acknowledge the comment then got to her feet.
