I didn't panic when I heard the key turn in the front door, even though it was only 9:30 at night. The Lipinskis said they would be out until at least midnight at a party. I had been their regular babysitter ever since Carolina was born nine months ago, though, and I knew they sometimes came home early. There were times when Mrs. Lipinski would get a headache at a party and they would call it an early night. They always paid me for all the time I was supposed to be there, though, and I really appreciated that. It's why they were my favorite clients.

My friends got into babysitting long before I did, because most of them had practiced taking care of their baby brothers and sisters. But I was the youngest child in my family and never had to do anything like that. My parents are older, and I was kind of an oops baby. This means my parents have always been really cool with me doing my own thing. I guess when parents get older they get relaxed more, because my friends all have strict parents while mine kind of let me do whatever.
