    Hi there, Tina, said the super, Mr. Finch, as Tina stepped into the building.

    Tina smiled at him. He was a kindly older man who could talk about his grandchildren for hours if given the chance, and he always fixed things promptly. She knew she was lucky to live where she did, in this apartment building.

    Hello Mr. Finch, said Tina in return.

    Mr. Finch looked at the big sack of books Tina had slung over one shoulder. Doing a little reading there, are you?

    Tina smiled at him. Just bringing a little work home, she told him. There was never enough time in her day to get everything done at the elementary school library where she had worked for six months now, her first job out of library school. She was the most junior librarian on the staff and she knew that all the other librarians expected a lot out of her, so sometimes that meant she had to spend her evenings with a bunch of books that needed to be cataloged, or repaired, or whatever else needed to be done to them.

    Besides, it wasn't like she had anything else to fill her evenings.

    Oh, I forgot to tell you, Mr. Finch said, you've got a new neighbor.

    Tina frowned in confusion. Did Mrs. Beachley move out? She tried not to sound too hopeful. Mrs. Beachley was very elderly and sometimes forgot her hearing aids, so she turned up the television as loud as it could go. The walls of the apartment building were thick, but not thick enough to keep that sound away completely.

    No, no,
