When Sonia arrived home for work, her mother was standing in the kitchen, making dinner. You got a phone call from a recruiter, she said casually.

Even though Sonia hadn't even gotten out of her work uniform yet, she felt her heart start to race. She hated working as a waitress at the diner, but it was all she could really get as a high school dropout who was still living with her parents even after all her friends had graduated. She didn't even really know what a recruiter did. What did he say? she asked.

Sonia's mother nodded at the notebook by the phone. He left a number, she said.

Sonia was tired after such a long shift, and all she really wanted was to collapse and watch some TV. She had been working since before the sun was up. But that meant she was home during business hours, and that meant the recruiter might still be there. She hated her job so much, she had to give it a try. She picked up and dialed the number and a man's voice answered. Hello?

Hello, she said, this is Sonia Barton, and I'm returning a phone call about a job.

Of course, said the man. Sonia was pleased that he seemed to know what was going on. Your friend Melody gave us your contact information and said you might be interested in something more... fulfilling than waitressing.

Melody? Sonia hadn't talked to her in weeks. She'd heard that Melody had some new kind of job, though, something that raked in the cash. Melody was one of the few who hadn't stopped talking to her when Sonia decided enough was enough, she couldn't take high school anymore.

There's an orientation tonight, if you're interested, the man continued. "We'd like you to come by and give you a sense of what the position would be like.
