She strutted the short distance down the driveway to the sidewalk and then to the next-door neighbor’s house. Her heels clicked on the pavement as she walked, only slightly louder than the chorus of chirping crickets in the grass.

There was a cozy warmth in the evening air. The sweltering heat from earlier in the day had made it hot enough to sunbathe topless. Now she was wearing a short summer dress with straps and a hemline that stopped halfway down her thighs. She didn’t look all that glamorous, but it was still a decent choice for the night ahead.

She stopped at the foot of the neighbor’s driveway and straightened her jet-black locks hanging loose over her shoulders. It was a fairly low-effort look, with just enough work put in to look presentable without spending hours prettying herself up.

Once she was ready, she walked up to the front door of the neighbor’s house and pressed the buzzer. The light was on in the front hall, and she watched through the frosted glass as her hostess appeared from the kitchen and came to greet her.

The door unlocked and opened, revealing a woman in levy jeans and a white t-shirt standing in the doorway. She had auburn hair that had been dyed at the tips and cut short into a tomboyish look, and a nose-stud that glittered under the light.

Right on time! said Monica with a pleasant smile.

Hi! said Stacey, with a beaming smile.

Come on in, said Monica, ushering her guest inside, everything’s mostly ready.

Stacey carefully wiped her shoes on the mat before following her hostess into the front room; a modest-sized space dominated by a single long couch and a knee-high table.

Make yourself at home, Monica told her, I’ll be right back.

Stacey sat down on the couch while Monica returned to the kitchen. There was an assortment of food prepared for the two of them, and Stacey helped herself. It was beautifully seasoned and made her mouth water, tempting her to pig out while her hostess was away.

Monica came back carrying two glasses and a bottle of white wine. She set everything down on the table before opening the bottle and filling the two glasses up.

You really went all out, Stacey complimented her, sneaking another bite.

Are they really your friends if you won’t roll out the welcome mat for them? Monica asked with a rhetorical smile.

She offered one of the glasses to Stacey and raised the other one in a toast.

To best friends? she suggested.

To best friends, Stacey toasted.

They clinked their glasses together and drank. Monica began eating her share of the food while Stacey gave her stomach a rest, although she did finish the rest of her glass.

Did Zach finally agree to babysit the kids? Monica asked, starting up the conversation.

He did, Stacey said with a joking grimace, but I promised him a blowjob in return.
