The detached houses were all white buildings with red roofs and black SUVs in the driveways, being baked under the midday sun. It was July, and the heatwave was at full strength, driving most suburbanites indoors to the relief of air conditioning and iced lemonade.

One brave young man was out for a jog. The sweat glistened on his muscles, drenching his skin and jogging shorts. Normally he would do a full run, but the heat was so intense that one lap around the block was enough.

He stopped to check out the neighbor’s house, shielding his eyes from the glare of the sun. It looked like some B-list movie star’s mansion transplanted into the suburbs, complete with a white Lamborghini in the driveway and a stone fountain in the front.

And who might you be? demanded a gruff voice behind him.

He turned around and saw a short man with dark hair and a puffy face. Actually, he was puffy from running and also had sweat beads rolling down his cheeks and neck.

Adam, he replied, I live next door.

Then you’d better get home instead of hanging around outside other people’s houses, the man answered gruffly, Adam.

Adam looked at him for a moment, confused by the man’s rude tone, then duly did as instructed. His haughty neighbor watched him go before returning to his own house.

Adam trudged up to his house and fished the keys out of his pocket. They kept slipping in his sweaty hands, but he managed to unlock the door and stumble into the cool, indoor air. The difference in temperature felt wonderful, and he retrieved the keys and shut the door.
