The Secret to Financial Health for Women - Dr. Deborah A. Niles

    Preface

My name is Dr. Deborah Niles, and I am board certified in family medicine. I have practiced in my specialty for over twenty years, and I have seen the impact that finances have on people’s health and lives. As a family physician, you learn that you have to care for the whole patient and not just the one or two things that bring them into the office. We have to address the physical health, mental health, and financial health of our patients.

Money can be one of the biggest stressors on an individual’s or family’s life. It is important to address all of these areas especially when the need arises. I learned that there was no point of prescribing a medication that the patient didn’t have money to pay for or wasn’t reasonably covered by their insurance.

Health insurance should be made available to all and at a reasonable cost if people are going to sign up for it. As a society, we have moved toward this effort with the Affordable Care Act, which is the comprehensive healthcare reform law that was enacted in March 2010. This act is also known as the ACA, PPACA, and Obamacare.

When I was in medical school, I started to incur a lot of student loan debt, and it continued to grow until it had almost doubled in size because of the high interest rates that were attached to these loans. Once I started residency and started earning a salary, some of these student loans could no longer be deferred, so I had to start paying them back.

I had to quickly learn what a budget was and how to create one and stick to it. As women, most of us don’t get these money talks from our mothers, because in some instances, our fathers may have handled the finances in our families or our mothers weren’t taught by their mothers or fathers.

In these pages, I’m going to teach you the secrets of what credit is, how to create an effective budget, and how to accumulate wealth by saving, investing, and paying your debts off. I’m also going to show you how you can create generational wealth so you can leave a legacy to your children and grandchildren. You are going to learn the same secrets that I have shared with my closest family members and friends. You, too, can be a millionaire in your lifetime and have that money transfer to your children and grandchildren. This isn’t a get rich quick scheme. This plan involves careful planning with your financial planner, time, patience, and consistency of saving and long-term investing. This is all possible, especially if you start at a young age and do this over
