作者董永良教授在此書中所收集的三十多篇短文，皆為他的近作；前部份是一般性的散文，後面則與他從事的教研工作歷程有關，稱為「我闖蕩學術界的那些人和事兒」。
目前這世界正處於動盪不安之時期，做為海外的華裔讀書人，要有一點我國古人處亂世的智慧，方能在異地求生存。此外，想到在這一生中所碰到的機遇與機緣，就覺得自己一定要懂得惜福呀！珍惜幸運的讀書與工作機會，珍惜可貴的師恩、友情與親情，珍惜己之所有，不要去貪戀己之所無；對人要寬厚、誠懇，少一份苛求，多一層包容，這就是本書中所想要表達的一種意境。
