Blossoming of the Red Plum Tree - Jack Jinn-Goe Hsia
About The Author
Jack Jinn-Goe Hsia was born in Anhui Province, China at the beginning of the Japanese invasion. During the war-torn period spanning the first eight years of his life, Hsia and his family moved frequently and hastily, covering areas north and south of the Yangtze River. In 1949, on the eve of the Communists’ occupation of mainland China, Hsia’s family settled in Tainan, Taiwan where he completed middle and high schools without interruption. Hsia majored in mechanical engineering at National Taiwan University. There, he expanded the scope of his learning through Greek history and Chinese poetry classes. In addition, during his Ph.D. studies at Purdue University, he served as editor for The Bell Rings at Purdue, a periodical of the Chinese Students’ Association.
Over a 36-year tenure at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), Hsia conducted research in spectrophotometry, helping set lighting and spectrophotometry standards for use in business and industry. As President of the International Commission on Illumination (CIE), he led efforts to advance the fields globally.
In addition to his professional pursuits, Hsia achieved the level of Able Toastmaster within Toastmasters International. He served as Principal of the Potomac Chinese School, advisory board member of Maryland’s Montgomery County Public Libraries, President of the Washington Chinese Literary Society, and is a member of the District of Columbia Chapter of the North America Chinese Writers’ Association.
In retirement, Hsia served as a volunteer docent at the U.S. Air and Space Museum. He is a certified Master Gardener through the University of Maryland Extension program, volunteering in its plant clinics.
Retirement offers Hsia the luxury of time to pursue his life-long passion for Chinese literature. His greatest joy lies in sharing his love for the Chinese language. He converses in Chinese with his grandchildren,
