Gwen Li

    Thank You

To reach more potential English readers, I have translated some of my published Chinese articles into English. I certainly have to admit that English is not my first language! It does need a lot of editing to make the reader enjoy the articles!

Whom should I ask to do this unprofitable job? Since I don't have any money to pay for their hard work?

For fear of too many pieces may take too much of their time, to reduce the burden of each person's work, I have asked more than one of my dearest friends or relatives to share the editing work.

    Again, I am incredibly grateful to my dearest friends or relatives;

1,Adela Karliner, In-law, college English professor, Retired lawyer.

2, Sandy Chin, Friend, Specialist in Special Education.

3,Descartes Li, son, Vice Chair for Education and Professor of UCSF.

4, Wendy Chou, niece, Environmental Worker.

    5, Ruth Yen, niece, Librarian.

I want to express my sincere gratitude to all five of them for the time, effort, and knowledge they have taken to polish my work!

I have received many phone calls and e-mails to congratulate me upon the publishing of  my first English and Chinese book of , <家有六仟金>, and wish that I could proudly pronounce that my dearest readers Well received my first book.  However, I especially appreciated so much that some of my best readers pointed out all the incorrectly written or mispronounced characters.

Because of the Covid-19 pandemic, at the government's behest, coupled with the actual needs, we practice staying at home policy for the whole of 2020 year. However, cooking more food to eat would make us fat. Watching TV all day long was such strenuous to our eyesight. Turning too many times in our Aerial garden, we certainly would make those seagulls dizzy, and they almost fell from the balcony!

What should one do? Ah, compile the second book! In the second bilingual book of , <好朋友>, I guarantee that I have been conscientious about making the same mistakes again!  I feel so blessed and grateful!

I have always thought that all the readers in the world are my friends and those who are willing to read my novels written with sweat and tears in Chinese, or are ready to read my dear editors worked over my English articles, are also my favorite best friends!

I sincerely ask my best friends to go online to snap up all my works:

    Foreword

    Edited by Wendy Chou(2019.10.30)

Because I was born and lived my formative years in China, so Chinese is my first language. And my readers were all Chinese traditional and simplified character readers.

To reach all these potential readers, I decided to translate my works into English. And I figured that it would also be an excellent chance for me to practise my English.  Since English is my second language, they need a lot of editing from my friends and relatives to help the reader enjoy the articles!

The original articles of this book were published in Chinese, later translated into English by the author, -and the English texts were further edited and polished by Adela, Sandra, Descartes, Wendy, and Ruth.  -Therefore, the original Chinese versions included at the end of each article were for reference, should not be thought of as word-for-word English-Chinese parallel texts. it should be more interesting to read the way it is.

I didn't imagine that the work could compile into books by accumulation in a few years, but it certainly has made me very happy!

I have received many phone calls and e-mails to congratulate me upon the publishing of my the first English and Chinese book of , <家有六仟金>, in March 2021, and wish that I could proudly claim that my dearest readers well received my first book.  However, I especially appreciated so much that some of my best readers pointed out all the incorrectly written or mispronounced characters.

    My Young and Handsome Sweetheart

    Edited by Descartes Li (04/02/2021)

Our little grandson was a chubby baby with white and tender skin unique to mixed races, with brownish-yellow hair and shiny eyes. He looked so adorable. Every time his grandfather and I came from Florida to visit, this cute boy wasn't at all shy. Whenever he had the opportunity, he would hold a book, sit on our laps, and turn page by page. As soon as the two-year-old saw a bird, the cutie would immediately point to the picture in the book and say bird! although we didn't know whether he likes birds? Did he recognize only the animal birds? Or did he only know how to say the word birds? However, with his loveliness, people couldn't help but unreservedly love him.

When did I start to admire him from the bottom of my heart? That was at the end of December 2015.  I was a newly widowed grandma and moved from Florida to California to live with my son and his family. I was tentatively using the room next to his. When I took out my Chinese laptop from my bag, my fifteen-year-old grandson came over immediately, holding a small piece of paper in his hand with the name of their WIFI and the password. He wanted to help me connecting their Internet.

My computer uses Chinese, is Chinese okay? I asked him.

Grandma, let's try! He said confidently.

Sure enough, as soon as the canonist shot, you knew right away who was the right one, and it worked!

Isaac, can you read Chinese on the computer? I asked. To myself, I wondered: Since you take a two-hour Chinese course only every other week, how can you be proficient?

Chinese is a pictorial language, so it’s simple!  What's more, regardless of Chinese or English, the icons and their positions on the screen are the same!  he replied with a smile. Then he asked me, I'm practicing making a Youtube documentary. Grandma, would you like to be my actress?

Actress? You should find a younger and more beautiful one. Why use an elderly granny? I replied.

Beautiful young actress is expensive, Grandma, only you might be willing to be a free one! The boy answered honestly.

When I watched the My Nai Nai grandmother Yu Gwoying video, I stared at the computer screen. I saw, accompanied by music, an old lady wearing a bright hat, matching scarf, and tottering about in the park. I couldn't help but laugh out loud and admire my talented grandson. This talented youth certainly is my most favorite grandson.

And he officially became my handsome sweetheart on this year's Valentine's Day. His parents dressed up and went out to have their Valentine's Day meal together.  I Concerned he might be lonely or bored, I knocked and pushed open the door to his room, and the young man was sitting in front of his computer.

Isaac, how  about we go out to your favorite restaurant for lunch? I asked him.

We have a new soup noodle restaurant nearby, Nai Nai, Do you like soup noodles? He answered cheerfully.

At noon, the grandmother and grandson were both dressed up and ready at the restaurant.

While eating noodles, he thoughtfully poured me a cup of hot water that is my preferred drink. And then afterward, he took my hand on the way home to avoid the heavy traffic.

Grandma, we all miss Grandpa YeiYei, but from now on, I'll take care of you! He bowed his head and said to me very kindly.

I looked up at this taller, sweet, young man, almost as tall as his passed away grandfather.  Tears filled my eyes, and his thoughtfulness melted my heart.

What a super warm and handsome young sweetheart!

    I Love My Old Friends

    Edited by Adela Karliner (12/15/2020)

In 2016, I  moved from Florida into an apartment in Chinatown, Oakland, California.

The day after, around noon, surrounded by silence, I did not feel like cooking and was sorting out my very few pieces of luggage with a hungry stomach. Suddenly I heard some voices in the corridor. Then,  my doorbell rang.  I immediately flew to open the apartment door. Outside, there stood three Chinese ladies, clean, beautiful, and friendly-looking.

Who are you looking for, please? I asked in  Mandarin.

We are looking for our friend Pauline to play mahjong, one of them answered in Mandarin with a Cantonese accent. She was a tall, healthy fortyish-looking woman with light hair. Later I came to know that her name was Meichu, and we affectionately called her Amei. She might have looked like a middle-aged lady, but she was eighty-four years old.

Ms. Pauline moved away. I  bought her apartment,  I answered and remembered the old lady who signed the sale contract. Her name was Pauline.

Oh, can you play mahjong? another lady with all-white hair asked me with a smile, my name is Maria. I am 94 years old.

    I'm sorry, but I don't play mahjong. I  answered.

Oh! the brown-haired young woman sighed with disappointment. She turned and prepared to leave. At the time, she was 76, the youngest one among us.

Seto,  Seto, don't be disappointed. Your mahjong skills are not very good anyway, try to comfort her, the others said.

Wait a minute. Please wait, although I don't play mahjong, how about the four of us going out for lunch together? I ran after them, invited with a smile.

Well, let's pay for ourselves.  It is called the AA system! it turned out that none of them had lunch either.

Since that day, the four of us have become good friends. When the restaurant is less crowded every Wednesday at noon, we are in the garden downstairs next to the famous Chinatown fountain waiting for each other. When everybody arrives, we discuss what kind
