Chapter 1
The demand for Italian food products in the world
The demand for Italian food products is enormous and constantly growing.
Italy is in 1st place as a producer of the most sought after foreign food.
Every year billions of people around the world buy an Italian product and of these, millions are loyal consumers.
But despite the export of Italian food products, which has already registered increases since 2015, it is not possible to make significant leaps forward.
In non-EU markets there are no rules to protect the typical brands of Italian products sold in foreign countries, for example, in America there is no difference between olive oil and extra virgin oil.
Foreigners love Italian food but are not always able to recognize it, this difficulty becomes an opportunity for foreign producers who take advantage, aware of the enormous demand for Italian food and wine.
They therefore produce and distribute on the market imitations of Italian products, which deceive foreign consumers, through the similarity of the name, origin or graphics of the package, often abusing the tricolor sign, which identifies the Italian flag.
The foreign consumer who wants to buy Italian food often finds on the shelf of the supermarket near his home, products that seem Italian, but which are not.
Some examples of products passed off as Italian originals are;
Parmesan, which is confused with the Italian Parmigiano Reggiano.
La Zottarella, which is confused with Italian mozzarella.
And again, Salami, Monticino, Regianito, Barollo, Macaroni, Monticella, San Marzani, Vinocella, are just some of the names that get confused as famous Italian products.
It is estimated that at least 2 out of 3 products marketed abroad are imitations of Italian products.
It is difficult for the foreign consumer to make the right choice, also because these products are mixed with the few real Made in Italy products that are present on the same shelf.
Buying an imitated product can affect the health of the consumer, often generating disappointment when it does not meet the expectations of the consumer, who is disappointed with the taste of the food, unaware of having bought an inauthentic product.
This is an even more serious collateral phenomenon because it can compromise the reputation of Made in Italy excellence abroad.
It is estimated that 1.2 billion people around the world buy an Italian product every year and of these 720 million are already loyal consumers.
The demand for Italian products is enormous and is constantly growing.
As we said, Italy ranks 1st for the most sought after foreign food products in the world.
Another penalty is the Italian entrepreneurial fabric of the agri-food sector, which is made up for over 95% of small and medium-sized enterprises, with a limited export orientation and underdeveloped logistics, with poor connections with distribution platforms abroad.
All this represents a brake on the potential value of food and wine exports which in 2016 reached 38 billion euros.
Foreigners love Italian food but don't know it well.
