A-Z Guide On How To Start Being Positive - Mike McCallister
What Happens When Your Thoughts and Actions Are Misaligned?
THINK OF A TIME WHEN you went into a stationery shop, hoping to get some supplies for a craft you wanted to make, but you were not sure about what you wanted to get or make.
You spent about an hour describing the craft to the salesman, couldn’t stop scratching your head to recall the things you needed, and eventually walked out of the store empty-handed, feeling more confused than before. You didn’t get what you want because you didn’t know what you wanted!
Now, think of a time in your life when the state of your life disturbed you greatly. You were unable to pay your bills, lived from one paycheck to the other, hated your job, and atop it all, your marital relationship was in trouble. While you knew you were miserable, you did not honestly know what you wanted.
The reality is that many people don’t know what they want. In actuality, if someone asked you to state what you want, the chances are high that you would go on and on about the things that you don’t want or that make you unhappy but would be unable to point out the things you truly want.
On many occasions in life, we steer towards negativity and sadness not because we don’t want to be happy but because we lack clarity on what we want, which keeps our feelings, thoughts, and actions from aligning.
When we don’t know what we want and yearn for, we get distracted by lots of other things that catch our fancy. Moreover, the absence of clarity causes us to focus more on our fears, doubts, problems, and confusion in life.
For example:
You know you don’t want to live from one paycheck to another, be friends with a toxic person, pursue a career in HR, but somehow, what you genuinely and deeply want is unclear. Since what you seek is ambiguous, you cannot manifest it.
That’s why the first step to positive thinking and supporting that positive mindset with growth-minded actions requires you to align your thoughts and actions with who you are and what you want.
Let’s discuss how you can do that:
How to Align Your Thoughts, Feelings, and Actions
IF YOU FEEL CONFUSED about how to go about getting more clarity in life so you can align every inch of your being with your purpose, thereby building a more substantial life for yourself, follow these simple steps.
#: Engage in conscious introspection
WE OFTEN THINK ABOUT all the things we don’t want in life.
You may not want to live in a small house.
You may not want a boring job where you don’t see any room for growth.
You may not want to live with your controlling parents.
Yes, you don’t want any of those things; none of us does. However, have you ever stopped to think about what you want instead of what you don’t want?
If you haven’t, you need to do so right now, yes, RIGHT NOW!
Create a 5-10 minute window in your routine every day and use this time to sit with yourself, consciously thinking about what you want.
With a journal in hand, loudly ask yourself, What do I want?
Clarify the question by attaching it to different aspects of your life. For example, you can ask:
"What do I truly want in terms of my career?"
What sort of a romantic relationship do I seek?
What kind of lifestyle do I want?
etc.
Write down all your findings so you can gain more clarity on the things you want. It is okay to go slow and spend time reflecting on your real needs; that way, you can figure out the exact things you want in life.
#: Eliminate ambiguous words from your speech
WHENEVER YOU SPEAK or take some action, take some time to think about what you want, thus ensuring that what you need and where you’re heading is clear. Instead of thinking about The things I don’t want or need,
think about The things I need and want.
If you are going to have breakfast, ask yourself about the kind of breakfast you wish to have on that day so that as you move into the kitchen, you do so with clarity.
If you’re thinking about which topic to choose for your thesis, think of the topics that interest you. Don’t waste time or invite confusion into your life by thinking about what does not excite you.
Slowly make a conscious effort to know and show what you want so you can take exact steps towards your clear and meaningful goals.
Prosperity does not come from doing big things. It’s a state of mind you cultivate by doing little things that bring you contentment, joy, and peace. Naturally, when you start doing the things you want to do, you feel peaceful and capable of constructing a prosperous life for yourself.
#: Express your true feelings
SOMETIMES WE HIDE OUR feelings when communicating with others to please and avoid hurting them. For example:
Your friend may inquire about which movie you wish to watch, but since you know that he or she likes watching horror movies, you say you want to watch the same, hoping to endear yourself.
There’s nothing wrong with caring for or wanting to endear yourself to other people. However:
Always prioritizing other peoples’ well-being over yours turns you into a people pleaser and pushover. Additionally, feeling like you don’t matter, more so to yourself, is hurtful: it creates a situation where nobody knows your needs, mainly because you don’t express them.
You can change that and turn things around for the better by clearly expressing what you feel and need. If you want to watch a romantic movie, say so politely. If you don’t wish to pursue a finance career like your father wants, voice your thoughts.
Clearly describe your thoughts in your head first, and then say them out loud. Even when you are alone and thinking of what you want, get into the habit of writing concise and crisp sentences describing your feelings. Consciously engage in this practice, and soon enough, you will get the hang of it and start focusing more on what you want.
As you start knowing and doing things you want, you will align your sentiments, thoughts, and actions and shall start feeling more powerful, positive, and happier with each passing day.
Having learned how to align your vital life energies, let’s move on to the next step: taking positive action by learning to be still.
Chapter 2: B–Be Still in this Frantic World
ECKHART TOLLE, A SPIRITUAL teacher, states, Wisdom comes with the ability to be still. Just look and just listen. No more is needed. Being still, looking, and listening activates the non-conceptual intelligence within you. Let stillness direct your words and actions.
Please spend a few moments reading this quote and then quietly absorbing it.
You’ll likely realize that the mere act of pondering on it will make you feel peaceful. If reading words revolving around stillness and calmness make you feel relaxed, imagine what being still would do for you?
If you analyze your life or the lives of the people around you, you will likely describe it as frantic, hectic, rushed, busy, or exhausting—you may use another word that more or less means the same.
We are often running to and fro from one task to another, rushing to complete things, and in desperation to get everything done on time. Even after doing this, rarely do we look upon the sunset with happiness in our hearts because we completed everything we had planned.
We fail to realize that the pursuit of material gains means we are running away from happiness, peace, and prosperity even though they’re the root drivers behind everything we do. All this happens to us because we don’t know how to slow down.
In our pursuit of trying to be more and have more, we somehow fail to make the most of this moment and experience it by being still. That is why being still is the second tool you can use to cultivate a positive
