Kyle rubbed the swollen edges of his eyes. It wasn’t from actually crying, just from holding back the flood. With no good reason of course, but somehow it just felt wrong. Like he didn’t have the right to cry for Tyler. Or that maybe Tyler was watching over his shoulder the whole time.

So what now? Are you coming back? Josh’s voice echoed through the speakers of his phone.

he springs in the bed squeaking under him, as he flopped on his back. He rubbed a hand over his hair. Rory had just popped some popcorn in the bus’s microwave, and now the smell of it wafted through the enclosed space, making his stomach turn. At least everyone had the good sense to stay up front and let him rest. The room was cramped enough as it was, even with just him.

I don’t know. The phone tipped in his fingers and dropped on his chest. He swore and picked it back up, letting the screen tilt back until Carl and Josh’s faces were upright again. What if I’m wrong? What if I’m imagining things? Or maybe it’s…I don’t know. Nothing makes sense anymore.

We’ll get it figured out, Carl said, leaning into the camera. In the meantime, we’ll take no chances and I’ll keep looking. I’m just glad you’re safe.

It would be better if he wasn’t. Kyle fiddled with the light fixture over his bunk and kicked up his feet. How is the search going? Anything yet?

They would have said so before now, if there had been. It was dumb to ask, but he couldn’t help hoping.

    Well. I didn’t want to tell you…

    Shit.

Carl rubbed his chin, weariness heavy on his face. Even through the screen, Kyle could feel it. He’d been dealing with the same not long ago. Not that he was exactly energized now.

We talked to the cops the other night and I guess they think it’s time to call off the search. Carl’s words broke through Kyle’s evaluation of him.

That wasn’t unexpected, but it shouldn’t have hurt so much to hear it. Assholes. So what, he’s officially dead now?

Carl sighed. They suggest we make arrangements for the funeral. But nothing can be official until they find the body.

Kyle pulled the pillow from behind his neck and jammed it in his face, struggling to keep the biting tears out of his eyes. A funeral. Shit. This was getting too real.

Ok, well… Kyle stuffed the pillow back in place and tilted the phone against his legs. What are you going to do?

Carl’s eyes darkened, his lips pulling downward, He’s my son. I’m going to keep looking for him.

Kyle almost corrected him but sucked the words back into his mouth before they came out. Eighteen years ago, Carl had dragged Kyle’s dad’s body off the battlefield. He would probably be the one to bring Tyler home the same way.
