I write books for middle grade and young adults. They range from scary to spun fairy tales and more.  Most of the stories, including the scary ones, are basically fantasy tales. YOu need to have an open mind when you read them. :-) That's one of the reasons I enjoy writing for the younger audience. I really think it's also why many adults are reading these types of books. To escape reality.

When’s Uncle Karl getting here? asked Billy. I’ll bet he has some gifts for us.

Billy kept pulling back the curtains and looking outside. Then he would pace the room.

Now don’t you go asking him about gifts when he first gets here, I said. Your uncle’s anxious to see you.

I knew Billy was as excited to see my brother as I was but I didn’t want him hitting him up for presents the moment he sat foot in the door. .

I know, said Billy. I missed Uncle Karl but I mean think of the cool gifts he might have. Maybe something from the jungle.

    Julie laughed.

Relax Sam. I’m sure Karl would understand.

    I know dear but –

I was interrupted by a knock at the door.

He’s here, said Billy as he leaped from his chair and sprinted to the door.

He yanked open the door and jumped into his uncle’s arms.

    Uncle Karl. I missed you.

Karl laughed and took Billy under his arms and lifted him in the air.

And I missed you. But I know you’re probably itching to see what I brought you.

Alright! said Billy. Is it something from Africa?

I shook my head. My brother wasn’t into formalities and he’d know Billy would be dying to see if he had gifts.

Karl, I said, extending my hand. Nice to have you back. Come on in and relax a bit. How about a drink?

How are you Sam? A beer sounds good.

    Karl put Billy down.

Do I get a hug, Julie?

    I cringed.

    Cool it Julie.

Julie smiled and walked over to Karl and gave him a quick hug.

Hi, Karl. How was the African trip?

    Whew.

I went to the kitchen to grab the beers. It only took a few moments but when I got back Billy was already tearing open a package.

    Wow, said Billy.

I watched his eyes light up as he pulled a necklace from the box.

Cool, said Billy. What’s it made of?

Those are genuine bone beads and they are supposed to signify prosperity.

    What’s pros . . . pros?

    We all chuckled.

Do you really think a six year old would know that word? I asked.

Pretty much means it brings you wealth and good luck, Billy, said Karl.

I like it but boys don’t wear necklaces.

They do in Africa. Men, women and children all wear them. But you can either wear it or hang it on your wall. When you see it just think of me.

Billy ran over and threw his arms around Karl.

Thank you, Uncle Karl. I love it. I’m gonna wear it.

Billy slipped the necklace around his neck and strutted around
